amniocentisis, personal experiences?

edited July 2011 in Pregnant
I never thought I'd ever consider it but ever since my last ultrasound the option keeps coming to mind. My baby displayed a dialated bowel at 27weeks, which is what my drs were looking for to determine his chances of imperforate anus, which is a condition my toddler was born with. I'm not even sure if that condition would appear on amnio, I assume not. However, I keep reading all these posts about that being a marker for down syndrome as well. I'm worried for my baby, I really hope nothings wrong with him & I'm praying it was bad imaging, but I want to be prepared.

If you've had amnio, how was it for you? I've read experiences from excruitiating to quick & simple.

  • I had one at 37 weeks, it was to check my daughters lung development. I was so scared of the pain but the only part that hurt was the needle going through my uterus. It was pressure that took my breath away for 3 second. The pain was there and gone. It was really easy and I got the results in 4 hrs. It made me feel alot better. Good luck hun!
  • Ive had two done..both were fast and easy. Ask all your questions and make sure your comfortable with everything..good luck
  • @kansasmomma, what would you describe the pain as? Did it resemble a strong contraction? I notice you said pressure? Gosh, I'm so terrified. That last thing I want to do is jump in the middle of the procedure!

@pink413, I'm not sure what questions to ask? Mainly I think I'm just concerned about the pain & risks. Idk what to do, ahh. :/
  • The pressure, I can only describe it like pushing a straw threw a balloon. It only caused pain for seconds. It was not bad at all. I was terrified too and after it I laughed at my self for being so scared.

Oh I did jump when the pressure of the needle going threw my uterus. It didn't hurt anything and the dr didn't mess up at all. He said every women jumps so the drs are used to it. The u/s tech had the u/s head on my tummy watching the needle and my baby the entire time! The needle is only in the uterus long enough to pull it back out and leave the clean small plastic tube in. Then fluid is removed and so is the tube. Its easy! I have faith in you!
  • It wasnt too painful..just like a needle in your stomache. And i just mean ask all your questions about the risks..your concerns..etc. If it doesnt 'feel' right before you do it..dont. I thought the results outweighed the small risk so i did it. You'll do fine!
