anyone with gestational diabetes have to take insulin??

edited July 2011 in Pregnant
I went to see a specialist this morning and was told my diabetes was severe enough that I have to take insulin at least once a day depending on how my blood sugar levels are. Since Im new to this whole diabetes thing just wanted to get some advice/experiences any of you have had dealing with diabetes, insulin and pregnancy.

  • That's what happen to me, but now turns out I was diabetic the whole time, so its permanent. Ugh
  • How high are your levels? I don't have to yet thankfully
  • @doodles they showed me the results of my 3hr glucose test today. Fasting was 112. 1hr after glucola it was 206, 2hr was 180 something and 3hr was around 140. I just got my blood sugar meter and will be checking my levels in about 20 minutes.
  • I'm kinda surprised they didn't try to control your diet first. Those numbers are high but not the highest I've heard of.
  • Yea I was gonna say the same thing as @doodles. That's how my numbers were for my first and I controlled it with a strict diet and excerise. Just had my 3 hr done with this pregnancy and I failed. Waiting to hear back from the diabetic counselor to figure out what I am going to be doing.

I am too. I checked my levels an hour after I ate and it was 87. After dinner it was 184... I'm totally confused. Insulin injections start tomorrow. I guess I'll just have to wait and see what happens
  • It may have been high due to what u ate. I am only allowed 45 carbs for dinner. Take it one day at a time.
  • Thanks @doodles. I might have to cut back to 45. She said I could have up to 60. Diabetes SUCKS! How far along are you?
  • It does suck! But babies are awesome ;-) I am 28 weeks 3 days.
  • With medication u can prob have more sugars and carbs than I can. Just ask ur doc
  • Babies are awesome. Especially October babies ;) good luck to you! Hope you have a happy, healthy little bundle. And thank you for all your help!
  • Yes! Octobabies are the best! You're welcome
  • I take insulin five times a day :(
  • They didn't gave u pills first? I have gd and I'm taking glyburin
  • Just took my first novalog injection and my whole side/stomach feels like it's on fire. @MrsThompson34 wow that sucks! I thought only once a day was terrible. I'm sorry you have to go through that :(
  • @waitingformybaby no they didn't. Before I saw the specialist my dr said they might be able to regulate with pills. However when I saw the specialist yesterday she said she doesn't like to prescribe pills to pregnant ladies as they are still unsure of any affects they might have on the baby and insulin doesn't pass through the placenta.
  • if its burning that bad u need to tell ur dr.. it burned a lil with me but not that bad. if it continues ask if u can try a different kind.. where are u giving urself the shots?
  • O really huh I'm happy I'm taking pills I would hate getting shots I hate them lol how far r u?
  • @ittybitty I inject in the right lovehandle. When I did a practice injection of saline on my outter thigh I think I may have gotten the muscle and it really bothered me all day. The burning has gotten a little better but if it continues I'll talk to the dr.
@waitingformybaby I would much rather take pills also. I hate shots as well and it took a lot of syking myself up to be able to stick myself this morning. I'm 27+5 u?
  • 32+1 I started with all this couple wks ago it really stresses me out
  • I had to take shots at every meal and before I went to sleep. I took them in my thighs.. i did get the muscle a few times but other than that it was the only place i felt comfortable doing it
  • at first it was just pricking my fingers four times a day n then weeks later they wanted me on insulin n said its best for baby. so they had me on five units of insulin morning n night. then as I got further along they moved it up to 9 units morning and night now that im 31 weeks its 15 units when I wake up, 15 before breakfast, lunch, dinner n last before I go to sleep. my stomach gets bruises from the needles :( I cant wait til shes here. hopefully, ur diabetes doesnt get worse like mines. good luck :)
  • @ittybitty are you still having issues with your blood sugar or did it all go away after you had your adorable little angel? (cute pic btw) :)
@MrsThompson34 thank you. I hope so too. Right now I only take 10 units right when I wake up. When will the torture end for you (aka when are you due)?
  • thanks :)
yea, it went away after I had her.. her sugar dropped low the day after I had her but since than we both havent had a problem out of it :)
  • I didn't know I had been diabetic for a long time. Until I went to hospital and in three days my life changed... From counting carbs to checking sugars and injecting insulin... It's horrible . I'm on five shots a day I take 14 units of novalog before breakfasts , lunch, and dinner . I take 46 units of humulin at morning and 26 units before bed... My levels were 374 two hours after meal when I first started.. now I'm at less than 90 for fasting and 120 or less for two hours after meals.. changing what I ate, how much I eat and insulin has helped. But everyday has become a routine... It's boring I eat the same time each day and etc.

I also have to be induced if she doesn't come by 38 weeks.
  • They first but me on glybride but crashed me to upper 50 to low 60. I now am up to 10 units at bedtime and now I'm about 94 fasting. At Dr now so we will see what they say this week.
  • im due sept 29 :) with a girl
  • @SuperMommy89 I agree it is boring having to eat at the same time everyday and it especially sucks I can't give in to my cravings whenever they arise which just so happens to be a big frosted brownie with sprinkles... mmm if only I could eat it i'd be in heaven. I'm sorry you'll still have it even after baby but at least you know and can get it under controll.
@iamom I hope you didn't have any adverse effects from having crashes like that. On a side note; does your user name mean you're from ia (iowa)?
@MrsThompson34 I too am having a little girl and I am also a Mrs. Thompson going on 3 1/2 years now.
  • awww thats kool, well nice to meet u mrs.thompson :)
  • @drgonzo523 no more adverse reaction for me. They did just increase me to 12 units at night though. Fun times
