Weight Gain - Doctor Lectured Me - Feel Like Bad Student

edited July 2011 in Pregnant
Alright, so I had my 27 week appointment today and from my last appointment (4 weeks ago) to this appointment, I put on 7 pounds.

Now, mind you, I lost my whole first trimester and started to gain very slowly. Last appointment, my doctor said "Your weight is right on track, not too little, not too much - perfect."

Then today she lectured me (felt like a bad student sitting there and so embarrassed with husband in the room). She said your fine still, but don't want it to spiral out of control. Keep in mind, I've gained 15 pounds total - I don't know why I gained so much this month as I eat healthy, don't have crazy cravings, and walk 60 minutes a day.

My husband saw my look of terror/sadness and said, "You just gained it in your stomach because the baby is growing now, don't worry, everything else looks fine. That doctor is crazy."

I still feel awful and now I'm panicking about what to eat, when to eat and when can I walk even more :(

Anyone else go through this? It sucks :(

  • ME!!! ALL 3 of my pregnancies i did this. and it was all around the same time. it happened twice this pregnancy. it's ok. don't feel bad. as long as you aren't hoarding food then eating everything in sight, or eating terribly you really dont have anything to worry about. at my 27 wk appt i gained 7 lbs from the previous appt (4 wks prior) and then my next appt 2 wks later i gained 5 more. i was shocked. the thing was i wasn't eating any more than i had been, or differently. usually baby starts having growth spurts at that time, as well as you start to retain more water. don't feel bad sweetie!
  • Don't feel bad I gained 3 pds last week an my dr told he could see it in my face, I could have slapped him) im 31 weeks an have gained 23 pds. I also watch what I eat but with being on bed rest its not like I can work off wat I eat. Don't worry about it, pregnancy is suppose to b about eating wat u crave an not worrying about the weight.
  • @survivormommie3 I'm so glad I'm not alone in this! It feels awful doesn't it? And then when the doctor gave me a little lecture, I felt even worse.

I'm definitely eating healthy and taking care of myself. I'm not perfect (cave in and have an ice cream once in a great while or some chips), but I eat balanced and well 90% of the time.

Are you retaining a lot of water? I noticed I am because I can't wear my wedding ring anymore and this started recently. Trying to watch my sodium intake and drink lemon water, but geez, a pregnant woman can only do so much! ha ha

Thank you for your kind words!
  • @emy He really said that? I would have flipped. Gosh, don't they know how sensitive we are with all these hormones surging through our bodies? I'm sorry that happened to you and also that you are on bed rest. That must be tough.

I've always been health conscious and weight conscious, so I may have taken the doctor's words a bit more harsh than I should have. It just feels like a lot of it is out of my control because I exercise and eat balanced.

  • @Mommy_of_two agreed, everyone woman is different and I can only do so much. I was running and very active pre-pregnancy, but was told to stick to walking because I had a cyst on my ovary and low lying placenta. They wanted me to do easier activities, so I can just walk or do Yoga. :)
  • At my 27week appointment I went through that too! I had gained 8lbs in 4weeks & she told me my weight was right on track but she didn't want me to keep gaining that much all the time. But for about 3weeks out of that month I had went through a junk food eating phase. But I felt like crap after that doctor appointment, I was like geez, might as well tell me I'm fat.lol. I was embarrassed also bcuz my bf/bd was there, but he likes me gaining weight bcuz my butt got bigger.lol. now I'm all worried about what I eat though, I'm scared to gain weight cuz I think I'm gonna get too fat ;(
  • @clope18 from what I've read, around the 27 week marker, most pregnant women gain between 16-22 lbs. The baby is growing and hormones change again in the 3rd trimester, so a lot can cause a weight gain.

Try not to feel too bad about it (I'm trying not to). If you had some bad weeks, just focus on eating better and I know it's hard, but don't obsess. It's good your bf/bd appreciates your new curves!!!

I hear you though, it is tough because you don't want to feel bad every time you go to the doctor and they weigh you. We already have so much changing with our bodies - to hear them lecture on weight can make us feel like whales! UGH!
  • @liloneontheway yea I know right, my husband even knows better to call me chunky lol. If u eat right an workout after the baby comes u wont have any problem getting back to size. Id say for now enjoy pregnant life (as much as we can anyway lol)
  • Me! I gained 12lbs in 3 weeks...the Dr lectured me too but come to find out it was cuz of constipation and basically I was going poo every few days so I was backed up. Plus baby gained almost a pound. At my next appt I had leveled out the weight gain. So don't worry hun, but ur Dr was still mean to u about it :(
  • Yes!! At my 24week checkup doc said I gained a total of 20lbs... I asked how much do she think I should gain for the rest of my pregnancy, she says "I think 20 total should be enough for this pregnacy" mind you, I still have 16weeks left and wa somewhat underweight to begin with. I'm not going to worry about it. IMO, I THINK YOUR DOING JUST FINE!!!!
  • Your doing fine. I gained about 60 pounds with my son. My dr never said anything.your doing great mama!and your husbands right :)
  • @emy next time give the doctor the evil eye and maybe he'll think twice!
  • @Kingsmama yes, when you're backed up it can make you hold onto weight for sure. Unfortunately, prenatals can make you constipated because of all the iron so you have to eat lots of fiber/bran and drink a ton of water. Still, you may feel constipated, it stinks.

My doctor is just very blunt and I think I felt put on the spot because hubby was with me. I already feel awkward in my new body, even though I am so in love with my baby and being pregnant, it just made me feel ugly/unattractive in front of him - he was very kind about everything though and sweet.
  • @claudia25 I wish more doctors would focus on the baby! HA HA! Yes, my baby is fine and growing as he should. I think they try to keep your weight on track because they don't want you to develop any health problems associated with rapid weight gain. But, you're right, you have to enjoy yourself here and there and not freak out about it. There's only so much we can do!
  • @Trisharose your doctor is harsh! I think you're right not to worry too much about it. If you're being healthy, exercising and baby is in good health, the weight should not be the biggest matter of concern. Here's to enjoying our pregnancies and telling the doctors to be nicer ;)

Thank you for your words of support!
  • Thank you so much, @maymommy11. I was never a skinny girl (always a bit athletic and weigh more than I look) so I wasn't expecting to get through this pregnancy without putting on some weight, you know. I wish my doctor was nice like yours ;)
  • I hate doctors like that. You could be rataining water and lose 3lbs tomorrow. There are too many factors to consider over that little of an amount. Let her know she embarassed you and next time to be a little more respectful.
  • I've gained 54 pounds so far and I've got 6 1/2 weeks to go. My doctor is kinda worried, but not too much. I think I gained all that weight from my ice cream binge in my second trimester. Idk why but I craved it really really bad all the time. Hopefully my baby has strong bones :D
  • 15lbs total is not bad at all for 27 weeks! Ur doc is crazy
  • My dr asked me about a 6 lb gain in 2 wks because sudden weight gain can be due to water retention and is a symptom of preclampsia. It ended up not being anything but I know its one reason to look at jumps in weight.

Some drs need to work on their bedside manner.
  • Lol im still trying to get the weight off tho. I loved my dr but she never told me she didnt deliver.. I switched from the dr I didnt like to her and the other dr was on call. Yes your dr is very crazy too. Thats a good amount of weight to be gaining.
  • @ll10 yeah, that is so true because 2 days ago I was 3-4 lbs. lighter and then today I noticed how bloated I was (which is why I took off my wedding ring - it was way too tight on my finger). I could see if I was gaining like crazy every month, but it was just this time and I'll be more cautious - but not obsessive. :)
  • @VictoriaB your baby got his fair share of calcium and will be very strong! That is the way to look at at! I think doctors should focus more on the health of the baby and not make us moms feel so blah
  • @ExcitedForOctober that's what I thought, too, but I guess she thinks differently. Like I said, I can only do so much and I'm not going to start restricting my diet (it's already lean) because it's not good for the baby.
  • @SaraS yes, I heard that is a sign of preeclampsia so I understand why they want to monitor the weight and make sure you're being as healthy as possible. But, you can't tell me that when these female doctors are pregnant - they are 100% perfect and don't gain a lot of weight. They should remember what it feels like to be on the other side of stir ups! ;)
  • @maymommy11 you'll get the weight off, just be patient with yourself and your body! That's strange that she didn't tell you she doesn't deliver, how confusing for you.

Your little boy is adorable, by the way.
  • Thank you :D im almost 3months pp and still have this gut.. And had my gall bladder removed and heard itll be harder to lose weight now. Very confusing. And when I came back for my 6week pp visit she left the practice.
