Question for mommies with newborn or previous children...monitors...play mat??

edited August 2011 in Pregnant
I'll be 35 weeks tomorrow and I'm buying the last of the things that I need for my baby. I have two questions....how soon after you took your baby home did you use a play gym/ play mat for tummy time etc? I don't know when my baby girl will use it and if I need it now, or if I can buy it a few weeks after she's born? ALSO....I'm breastfeeding my baby, and she will be sleeping in a pack n play next to me bed for the first few months....do I need a baby monitor then if she will be sleeping with me? And for naps during the day, my apt isn't very large, two bedrooms, 1070 sq ft. Her bedroom is right near the living room, if she naps in there, or she may just nap in her swing or bouncy seat in the living room with me. Should I wait to get the monitor until she sleeps in her bedroom at night? thoughts?

  • Well I waited til she could hold her own head pretty well before putting her on tummy time, but everybody is different, and is always good to have the monitors just in case if you need to cook or clean and you leave her in her room so the noise wont wake baby up

  • Jaden's a month old and I still haven't used my mat or monitor. I think both can wait a bit.
  • Girl I had my monitore on the first nite. My apt is pretty small to we live in a 1 bedroom and his crib is right beside me in the room and our pack and play is in the living room. I use the monitore all the time. I hold the hand piece while I sleep...lol when I here him caugh or move about I just click it on and I can see him. I also use it when I take a shower or go do dishes when be naps. So yes get it..lol. We got the play matt to for tummy time too. But you won't need it for a few weeks. I started putting my guy on it at about 8 wks and he disliked it. He's 14 wks now and he loathes it still to this day. But every baby is dif. Im thinking he will roll over in his own time, no need to stress him out if I don't need to. Congrats on your baby to be...
  • I agree. If you dont plan on putting your baby in his/her own room then I wouldnt worry about a monitor until he/she is in there... as for the mat for tummy time thats up to you. I never used one
  • What the heck is tummy time? Lord, I already feel sorry for little Blueberry...

Wow! I always wondered what that was. Thanks for the info! @caffeinated_katie Just yesterday I put this little zebra mat on my registry (goes with Blueberry's theme) and it said something about tummy time but I thought they were just trying to be cute. Go figure!

  • Srry posted it too many times. Stupid phone.
  • I start tummy time right away being belly to belly with baby. I didn't do tummy time on the floor till he was a week or two old. Heh tummy time in my house was another way of saying moms using the bathroom :)
  • You can start tummy time at 2 weeks old. I have a boppy I prop him on his belly he looks all around. I also have him sit on my propped legs and hold his hands and pull him up a bit, builds muscles.
