Colostrum Question

edited August 2011 in Pregnant
First of all... OW! #-O

Alright, so. I'm currently 22w 5d, and I started noticing a small amount of colostrum at 15w, I think. Now, the amount is a bit more substantial as opposed to a few drops, but obviously not a ton.

When I first got it to come out, it was because I was having sharp pains under my nipples. I looked up what the pain could be, and most people suggested squeezing a little to get it to come out, and it would help with the pain. I did so, and it worked!

I only get the pain every now and then. Of course my actual boobs always hurt, but I'll get the pain in the nipples to an extent. So on to my question.

Is squeezing and working it out now at 22w going to hurt me down the road when baby David gets here? I'm planning TRYING to breastfeed about 95% of the time (I'd like to 100% of the time but realistically, I don't see it always happening that way) and just want to be sure my milk supply is still alive and kicking.

Also, a bonus question, should I look into having a breast pump for after he gets here? Is it a lifestyle kind of thing (I'm currently stuck at home until I find a job, which is starting to look like after the baby gets here) or should everyone have one...? I'm pretty clueless in that area. Ftm! Lol.

Thank you so much for your help and advice. >:D<

  • Your milk supply will be fine when he gets here. If you don't plan on breast feeding 100% of the time but want baby to have only breastmilk then yes get a pump. The first years mipuump that works with the breastflow feeding system is really good price. I got their double eletric/battery pump for 66 and some change at walmart.com had it delivered to the store no shipping cost
  • Hi,
I am no professional; but I would totally advise you against trying to work it out, the colostrum. Colostrum is the beginning "milk", Baby David will have a very small undeveloped stomache, he will not eat or need very much, that said colostrum is jam-packed with vitamins, minerals and other wonderful nourishing properties. It's liquid GOLD. Once the baby consumes all of the colostrum, your breast begins to produce the mature real milk. I don't know if expressing it will cause you to have the same affect.
I just gave birth three days ago, my mature milk was in by day 2.
I don't know for sure, this is just my guess; you should definitely consult your doctor.
  • I'm just trying to get some out as it feels like it builds up at the top. Definitely not trying to get rid of all of it! :)
