HELP! Pet related!

So my husband & I have 3 cats. Well one started pooping all around our basement. So I looked online what to do for that. Clean up & block off. Done! We bought a carpet cleaner and turned on the dehumidifier and cat pee smell surround our basement. Well now without the family room area accessible for them they are peeing (not for sure which ones) in the laundry room right by their litter boxes! I cleaned uy once on sunday but haven't noticed it until today when I was stepping on or tile things and liquid would come thru the deals. I put alot of paper towels down & with the dehumidifier going it's soaking in to the paper towels. I'm calling the vet tomorrow to get them checked out. Because I've heard they do this when they have urinary tract infections. I'm hoping they do and it's fixable because I don't want to have to let them go. :( we will probably have to take up all the carpet & rip up the fake tile in our laundry room anyway, but I want it fixed.

I guess besides my vent I want to knorr has anyone heard of any other techniques of stopping them from peeing outside the litter box?

  • I heard if you put it in a small area it might work. Makes them feel like they have privacy. Sounds weird but it worked for my sister
  • I need to know to but my cat poops every were
  • There is this spray called dumb cat. Its a pharamone that deters cats from the area it is sprayed. It works amazing :) and my cat does the same thing. She used to pee on my pillow! But that's because her box wasn't getting cleaned like it should, she's my bfs cat, and when I moved in, she started peeing on all MY stuff lol. But we got the Dumb Cat, and she doesn't pee anywhere but the litter box now. You can find it at petco.
  • Good to know! I have a male cate who is neutered and never sprayed but out of the blue started peeing in corners and along baseboards. I thought it was because I wouldn't let him outside sometimes. He neutered and doesn't have front claws, why the hell would want to go out there with the other mean stray cats! I will have to buy the Dumb Cat spray. About how much is it? And how much do you get? @tinkergal
  • Its a pretty big bottle and I wanna say it was between 10 and 20 bucks its been like 2 years so im not sure. You can prolly find it online for cheaper than petco :)
  • Look up www.vinegartips.com they have a pet section, lots of uses for cats. Plus white distilled vinegar is inexpensive.
  • Www.ryanspetsupply.com ask for a catalog tons of stuff cheep! Might have the spray there talking about...cats might b getting jealous I dunno other than vet....my cats never did that
  • How many, cats do you own? Rule of thumb, one litter box per cat +1. They like to go in clean places just like us so also scoop once a day.
Also are they fixed? That will help along with replacing the floors.
These are steps that I have found that worked for me
  • @littlefae I have 3. We had 2 litter boxes and they were fine but then pooping started so I added a 3rd. They are fixed too & have been since kittens.
@sara102011 we've lived in or house for a year before all this happened so their litter boxes have been fine! It just makes me sad we've had them for 7 & 8 years and I don't want to get rid of them. :( my assumption is one or all have a uti! Hopefully then I can treat it.
@tinkergal they have been peeing right outside the little box do you think they wouldn't go in their at all then
  • My moms cat started spraying in his teen/adult years. It came out of nowhere and he was just marking his territory.
  • @newmommyfeb2012 I was just at the vet she said it's probably a territorial thing. but she recommend I have another litter box, total of 4 and clean them daily if not multiple times a day. Hopefully we can figure it out. I'm so frustrated & my husband is about to kill them!
  • Can you make them a huge outdoor cage attached to a doggie door maybe they need a change of atmosphere...give them a real tree to climb on n sum grass to play w bugs? Lol just a thought...my cats were always indoor outdoor
  • Ya I understand what you mean. It stinks when animals you've had for a long time start doing that.
  • Vinegar!! It worked for my cat and dog.
  • @azmom I have a fenced in yard, whenever I let them out they eat grass, come in and puke it up. They do not have claws so climbing a tree wouldn't be possible. I get nervous letting then outside because the best cat I've ever had we always went outside & he got hit & died. But when my fence is fully closed I will give them another shot at playing out there!
@natashalynn vinegar to take away the sent? Or to keep them away from it? I will try anything! I just night stuff at the vet for carpet, i'll put it on the carpet over & over until we don't smell it anymore! Ugh this sucks. I just hope we that me & the 3 of them can"have a talk" about it tonight and they will stop lol.

  • try diluting a few drops of citronella essential oil in water and spraying it where they pee. It will cover scent and stop them rescentingbecause they hate they smell also its natural and smells lovely!
  • @loobiloo22 they are peeing right next to the litter boxes do you think they would not go in there at all then?
  • i would try and move the litter boxes is poss. that what i did with my two cos ther're both boys and apparently they were scenting the area. so i sprayed the area after i moved the boxes. alos if youy have to rip up ur flooring make sure you scrub the area with diluted bleach and then loads of bicarbonate of soda on the floorboards and leave for a while and then hoover it. repeat it is you have to. if you dont then the smell will come through the new flooring,,,,i learnt this the hard way :S
  • sorrry ment the bicarb soda had to be a powder to absorb the smell not liquid
  • It does sound the symptom of a uti, you can go on veterinarypartner.com to look up other symptoms to see if they have any of the other ones. Have you made any changes to their environment recently? Or in diet? And the dumb cat will make them not pee wherever its sprayed, so if its right next to the litter box where they've been peeing, I would spray that spot, and move the litter box. Im not sure if spraying it next the the box and not moving it will help your problem...
  • And citronella is a great natural way for training animals I would recommend trying that like @loobiloo22 suggested. Its safe, yet effective :) and prolly cheaper than the Dumb Cat!
  • @loobiloo22 @tinkergal we only really have one place the litter can go but for now until we get the laundry room cleaned up I brought the litter boxes up to our dining room and took baby gates to block off the laundry room. nothing had changed, no new animals, environment, or food. I have one cat locked away in the bathroom & now he is going in the litter box I think it had to be a territorial thing. However I am bringing that cat in anyway got the sores on his paw. Ugh I want this to be over!
  • @BabyLuv8 sometimes you need a box per cat, dont know if you tried that as sometimes they wont share especially males. also just be vigilant on cleaning it up as soon as they wee so they dont spray over one another!

@loobiloo22 I had 3boxes. The vet told me I metered to add a 4th so I did!! I use to have 2 until about 3 months ago and they did fine for the last year then I added a 3rd one. The vet said it could be there age they are reaching their older adult age! 2just turned 7 and the other is 8. Oh and yeah in the laundry room I thought I had cleaned it up on sunday, until 2 night ago I realized it was seeping under the fake tile! Now they can't go in there at will until we get it completely cleaned out, because thats what they were doing I think just going over each others!
  • i had the same problem so i understand and cat wee stinks. we ended up treat the floor boards and reflooring as well as replacing a door and skirting board cos they pee in a corner. They only stopped a yr ago after doing it in the same spot intermittantly for ages. but now we only have one as the othe passed away
  • @loobiloo22 yeah it sucks but our basement just got carpeted last june! And my husband put the fake tile things in the laundry room like 8m ago. Grr!
  • its a nightmare to sort out once its start just do the bleacj and bicarb thing before you lay new carpets we didnt first time and they could still smell it and started peeing again did it second time and dit work like a dream!! my husband got fed up wit it luckily tho he loved them and didnt make me get rid of them :-D
