Concerned

So I am now 36w5d with my third. Last Monday my doc measured me, to which i was 35w6d at that time, and she says i was measuring an easy 40 wks, maybe a little over!!! I have measured "on week" until this appointment. I haven't put on too much weight or anything.
With my second, my son was fine until the last appt where he measured only 2 wks ahead- which wasn't really a concern because of health issues i had. When it was time to push I only pushed 3 times. That last push wasn't all that much of one either and the resident delivering looked freaked out (yes i realize they are residents for reasons and looking panicked and not have mastered the "everything is fine....but not really" look just yet). He wasn't coming out and all I kept hearing was the resident hollering at the attending about his collar bone. I have no thought to this as I was only concerned about my son getting out. He was deliver with both the resident and attending "yanking at him." Then for just over the first minute he wasn't breathing and was rushed to the nicu. Ultimately he was only there for just over an hour and he was better but needed revived and oxygen assisted. He was 39 wks and weighed in at 8 lbs 11 oz 22."
Here is my concern: I just NOW (my son is 5 yrs old and for some reason in the past 3 days all of this dawned on me) realized this was due to his size. They were discussing willingly breaking his collar bone to get him out because he was so darn big! I am definitely mentioning this to my doctor at my next appointment on Monday, but I am scared she will get too big. What if my doc doesn't want to help things along? I am not for inducing unless it is medically necessary, but I am now officially freaked out that she will be just as big or even bigger than my son!! Any suggestions on what to say to my doc, or if i am wrong in this thought? @HomeBirthAdvocate?

  • Give birth doggy style, it opens up your pelvis a good bit more, naturally!
  • Or squatting. On your back, gravity is not in favor.

  • I'm pretty sure girls are usually smaller in the shoulders than boys too. It is true though that the size isn't so much the issue.
I've had 3 babies born with broken collar bones, & they were smaller than 8# 11oz. Because I've had so many kids, they came out too quickly, not having time to "mold" to the birth canal.
I'm just wondering if that may have been the case with you since you only pushed 3 times?
I always check my baby's collar bones now because the docs didn't even notice 2 of them. I had to take them to the pediatrician at a week old & say, hey, I think his collar bone is broken.. & sure enough it was.
  • great! thanks ladies! I appreciate the info and I feel better now.
