Cholestasis..Lovely. :/

edited August 2011 in Health
Since around 25 weeks (give or take) I've been itching like a crazy person. It's mostely at night, it gets absolutly intolerable, NOTHING helps, & it's driving me nuts! Someone on here gave me a heads up about Cholestasis & I asked my previous doctor to check the levels in my liver to see if that's what's going on. He did, but it came back normal. The itching never went away or improved, so I mentioned it to my current doctor yesterday & got more blood work done. Today I get a call saying my liver enzyme levels are high, but that can be caused by multiple things (hepatitis is one of them, which I know I don't have). So, tomorrow morning I have to go in to do some more blood work to rule out all the other factors & I have a follow up appointment Friday morning. I'm 37+1 & if I do have Cholestasis, I REALLY shouldn't carry much longer since the chances of having a stillborn go WAY up. I'm SO happy they caught it, but a little worried about the near future.

  • I hope everything turns out ok hun. You and lo are in my prayers
  • @texasmom3 has it too. Sounds awful!
Hopefully everything will be ok :)
  • @youngmami3 Thanks. :) I'm sure we'll be fine.
@Jaime77 I'm pretty sure now that the doc knows something is up, he'll be keeping a close eye on me. I'm just glad I was persistant, and didn't just turn the other cheek to it. :)
  • I'm glad you said something :) and had them check again. My doctor was supposed to monitor her again this Friday but the medication he has me on (ursodiol) is not helping. This weekend the itching got so bad I almost went to the hospital :( I scratched my legs till they bleed. My doctor called this morning and scheduled my induction for the morning instead of the 17th. I found absolutely no relief from anything over than benadryl to just sleep it off. I feel so bad for you :( I'm so sorry u are having to go through this. Remember no hot or warm baths or showers. Just cold! I know that's super hard to do but the heat makes it so much worse....my husband's takes my mind off of it by rubbing my feet with jergens lotion. Even if he has to do it several times a day, it helps.
  • @Texasmom3 So, there IS medicine for it? :/ I don't know a lot about the treatment part of it, I just know about the symptoms & side effects from doing my own research. Anywho, I do the same thing with Benadryl (now Zyrtec). It doesn't do anything to the itching, but it knocks me out. Lol. The entire tops & sides & up my legs are COMPLETELY covered in scabs from me scratching myself until I bled, but even seeing that wasn't enough for the doctors to think something is up, which I don't understand. So, from what you know about this, is induction a MUST? I mean, I don't mind having to be induced, just curious about what's going to happen from here out. :) I hope your induction goes smoothly! I bet you're excited about meeting the little one.
  • I'm super excited but a little nervous :/ in most cases it looks like the almost always induce before 40 week's and depending on if it gets worse then sooner. I'm kinda glad he's doing it tomorrow cause I've been a nervous reck worrying about her and trying to feel her every move. The last couple of days I've been rubbing that calamine lotion idk if that might help. He told me he's inducing cause he knows I'm miserable. The medication takes days before it even helps a little bit. Its for the liver but is supposed to bring the itch down a little.
  • @Texasmom3 That's how I am. I have an anterior placenta & I don't feel her every move unless I REALLY pay attention, or she's moving a lot. I've been on edge worrying, pretty much to the point of making myself sick. But, the way I see it, I'm 37+1, which is full term, if things are starting to go downhill, why not just induce me instead of risking it, ya know? She's measuring 2+ weeks ahead, anyway, and I'm sure me freaking out all day every day isn't doing her any good. Like today, after I got the call about my blood work, I worried myself so much, I had to FORCE myself to eat dinner & all that ended up doing is making me sick. With the medicine taking days to build up in my system, once they give it to me that is, I'll be 38+ weeks. I just hope that when I go into my appointment Friday & explain it to the doctor like this, he'll just want to induce. :-< Talk about stressful..
  • I have to force myself to eat also. I read that cholestasis causes depression and a lot of woman don't feel hungry when they have it. It is very stressful!
