enfamil or similac?

edited February 2011 in First time moms
Its about time for me to start stocking up on formula because i won't be breastfeeding for health reasons.
so please experienced moms, which formula do u recommend and why?
And also, i was wondering is it bad to switch formulas like it is with my dogs food they said its bad for my puppies tummys to use different brands and to stick with one kind- so would it be bad for baby to experiment with different formulas should i pick one kind and stick to it? What if i have no choice to buy a different kind one day because they at out of my particular kind or something?
Thanks for the advice!

  • Ohh i didn't really think of that yeah it would suck if i bought a bunch of formula he couldn't eat
    Thanks :D
  • I liked similac the best I tried enfimel my daughter didn't mind it but couldn't get the formula to mix up good enough the nipple kept getting clogged. I used similac sensitive because my daughter kept spitting up but she ate what ever formula we gave she wasn't picky and to this day is isn't picky about food or her milk
  • Yeah I've heard that enfamil clots up and plugs the nipple now I've heard it more than once so that may be not my first choice when trying formulas.
Does the bottle or nipple make a difference on digestion? Is there any recommendations on bottles and nipples? My Mom swears by the drop in liners but she hasn't had a newborn for 14 years lol what's new and improved out there?
  • I am a good start mommy. Worked the best for my kids. Hated enfamil
  • My daughter was really colic when she was born. I tried every formula out there. Finally I tried nestle good start soy. Ever since then she has been sleeping through the night no belly aches.
  • I would wait and maybe buy gift cards for stores that you would buy from in case your baby has reactions to different types. My daughter had issues with similac then we had to go on soy enfamil by thevtimevwe figured out the problem :)
  • @Babyboyontheway I used similac with my son but we had to do the find the right kind BC he had a milk allergy n cudnt take anything but soy n similac just worked the best for my son i like it best n will use it in the future and as for bottles my son had horrible feeding problems n wudnt lattch on the bottle he said that 99% of feeding problems n digestive problems are caused by the nurser drop in bottles I tried Evert bottle out there I mean Playtex nurser, drop ins, advent, gentle flow, vent air, tumee tippee and the best ones n the one I would recommend all day is the doctor brown's. They have alot of parts n seem like alot of cleaning but trust me so worth it coming from someone who has tried them all I will most definitely be using them on this baby too good luck n hope this helps
  • His doctor said lol not he dry pregger brain :)
  • @Landynplus1momma I've been looking at dr browns bottles lately but which one was best? They have glass ones and wideneck and don't they have the curved ones?
lol I'm just so picky this is my first and most likely my only and last so i really want to get it right because i won't have any do overs and well because i want the best of the best for baby :)
  • @babyboyontheway ok I used the doctor brown ones that sent glass just straight with the thinner nipple when u see them u will knew and as.far as the best goes I feel the same way n I have seriously tried every n all bottled n if I haven't I have experience BC I do daycare n have been around alot of children n the ones on the doctor browns do better all my moms now also swear by them in fact all the mommies n my neighborhood also use them they work great n I wouldn't tell u this or give my input if I didn't honestly think they were the best good luck with your lil bundle :)
  • Wernt ugh stupid phone
  • Well it also depends on what ur family is used to cuz all of my family were similac we wouldn't finish what they gave us.....ewwww and id say dr. Brown and platex vent air are the best my friends have them for their baby girls and boy
  • I don't know if I would ever use similac again. Last year they found all those bugs and larvae in the formula. I still have that in my head.
  • Oh wow i didn't know that I'm goloing to google it up right now Thanks!
  • Don't stock up til you know what your child can take. My hospital started us off with Good Start and my son took it well so we stayed on that but its different with every child
  • Most hospitals give your baby good start. Talk to the hospital before you go to see what formula they have. I love the dr. Browns bottles but always got the plastic ones. We were told by the pediatrician not to use glass ones because they could easily break if dropped.
  • We use generic brands. I switch between brands and haven't had any problem for my son (he is 8 mo. old, started formula at 6 mo. because i got pregnant ;) ) I have bought walmart (parent's choice), target (up & up), smiths/kroger (comforts), and western family (associated foods stores) brands. They are all pretty much the same.
