the induction process...

im being induced in about 2 to 3 weeks and was just wondering what the process is. is it painful? how fast does labor go, or how slow do you progress. any other info you can share would be amazing :)

  • I had an induction 8days overdue.Pitocin induced contractions were really painful for me. I had asked for epidural 2hrs in.
The process took nearly 8hrs start to finish. 4 to fully go to 10cm..i had another 4 to push this stubborn boy out, he was really high up. I've read various stories, some have longer, resulting in c_sections, some really fast. I hope urs is a fast one.. Good luck!!
  • With my last induction they gave me my epi before they started the pit. I plan to do the same next week with this induction. That was also my quickest labor. My doctor believes it was because I was relaxed and pain free the entire time.
  • @Jaime77 oh no i hope its not too painful i really wanted to do a natural birth with no pain meds, and i know ill absolutely refuse the epi. my girl is really high up still too :( im really afraid ill need a csection

@tlj2011 i didnt know they did that. i always thought you had to be at a certain point before you got the epi. im going to refuse the epi just because it scares me lol, id take any pain over a needle in my spine, but thats just me
  • If mine doesn't come out before then (I think she will though) I have an induction with cervadil set for her DD (the 25th). I'm praying she just comes on her own though, I want no other medicines, except maybe an IV to stay hydrated.
  • You can do it natural =)
or they have iv pain meds too instead of the needle.

  • @caroline8_p what is the cervadil, im not sure how they are going to do my induction yet. i would love to go into labor on my own, but i just dont see it happening :( i dont want any meds either, but my hospital makes you get an iv, i really dont want one tho unless i feel like i need it which stinks!

@Jaime77 i hope i can do it natural. and yes ive heard of pain meds thru iv, hopefully i can make it a while before needing them, i hope im not going to be a big baby :(
  • @Mama_Kat thank you for the info! i just got my gbs test today and will find out the results on monday. im hoping its negative but o well if its not. does it hurt when they strip your membranes? i looked into the cervical block and screw that! lol im such a baby whenit comes to needles i will do anything to avoid them. lol. and i didnt know you swelled from the pitocin either. not cool.
  • I'm not really sure. I never looked into induction cause personally I'd rather not get one. Only set one cause my mom will be here for 11 days only, and it guarantees she'll be here for the birth (given the baby doesn't come before the 20-21st) and some grandma bonding time.

But its something the put on your cervix to help ripen it. That's all I know.
  • @jazzi89. Yeah they don't usually offer it because a lot of people are so convinced that an epi slows down labor. This will be my 4th epi. I have had no problems or complications with any of them. I will tell you this the two times I did wait to get my epi were my 2 longest labors. I started out with the iv pain meds first and after about 12 hours I finally got my epi and still didn't deliver for 8 more hours both times. The one time I was induced and got the epi straight off my labor was 8 hours from start to finish. Btw the first two times I was not induced. I have also had 2 natural child births as well. Not by choice though lol.
  • @caroline8_p ya i didnt want to be induced either so im kindof hoping she comes on her own, but i have pre-e so they dont want her to stay in any longer than she has too. hmm, ill ask my dr about it

@tlj2011 wow, ur superwoman lol. this will be my one and only baby, i hate being pregnant and will not do it again lol. how were your natural births? and do the iv pain meds help?
  • The user and all related content has been deleted.
  • @jazzi89 it all depends on your pain tolerance. If you have good pain tolerance then then the iv meds will work good. My tolerance is low so it only worked for my mild contractions. My natural births were fast. I mean I was literally delivered before they got me to my room head out lol. So I had no choices on those. But for sure something I would never do by choice lol. I'm all for pain free as possible.
  • @Mama_Kat ya screw that lol

@tlj2011 id like to think i have a good pain tolerance, but idk, ive never had a baby lol.
hopefully mine goes fast! although being a first timer i doubt it
  • I'm glad someone else asked this because im getting induced in about 3-5 weeks and i was wondering is labor from being induced easier if you have already started to dilate on your own beforehand or does it hurt pretty bad either way?
  • @MommaJTall good question. i was dialated but now im high and hard?? idk how that happens but it stinks.can i ask y your being induced?
  • A lot of people say if you are dialated it goes faster which does make since. But when I was induced I was not dialated and it was my fastest labor.
  • @jazzi89 Thank you! i've been meaning to ask this for a few days, I just kept forgetting but if i dont go by myself by 38 weeks he is inducing me because he is leaving for vacation and wont be here when my due date comes. I've only heard horror stories from family and friends about being induced but they were never dilated tho either
  • @tlj2011 hmm, mayb i will b lucky and have a fast labor. idk how all of a sudden im up high and barely dialated now but im kindof pissed. and its so uncomfortable to get checked now, ugh
  • @MommaJTall ya i have a billion questions going through my mind right now just because im so freakin nervous with it getting closer. i dont know any one who has been induced...
  • @jazzi89 I know what you mean im not really nervous yet. but it'll probably hit me once he gives me a date to when im gonna be induced. but im prayin that comes before preeclampisa does. since i guess i have a good chance of getting it since my mom and gma did too.
  • @MommaJTall ya i get my induction date either on friday or the following week. yikes! and i hope you dont get pre-e. i have it and am on strict bedrest with only bathroom privledges and have to do nst's 2 times a week and weekly 24 hr urine collections. pre-e is y i have to be induced
  • @jazzi89 oh my goodness! im sorry you have to go thru all of that. but atleast its almost over then. when is your due date?
  • @MommaJTall ya it sux bad. and yes its almost over, yay! my dd is sept 10th
  • @jazzi89 oh i bet! awe im due sept.25 but im hoping she will make her appearance between 4-18 on her own or im gonna probably be induced between 19-22

When I was induced I went in at 5am they started the pitocin I got my epi at like 5pm and had her a 946pm labor was long but not to hard or painful I got my epi web I was around 5cm just to let u know I'm terrified of needles but the epi ain't as bad as u think the needle doesn't stay in u they just use it to put a lil catheder in u then they pull the needle out and its more of a pressure feeling not a jabbing pain like a needle poking u
  • These days the internet breeds fear. There is so much on the internet that breeds fear in ftm's. Back when I had my first the only thing there was to fear was the actual pain of natural child birth. The only only resource we had back then was the birthing movie they showed in our lamaze classes lol.
  • @MommaJTall well i hope it goes fast for you! :)

@lala15 so yours wasnt to painful with the pitocin?? ugh the thought of an epi makes me nauseous lol. i will absolutely refuse lol. id rather do anything else but that idk y.

@tlj2011 i agree the internet has traumatized me. i saw a birthing video while in a class in hs. and yup that was one of the deciding factors when i decided to never have kids lol. well along came this little surprise girl and its too late now lol
  • Yea well I don't like pain and I was scared of doing it natural good luck hun hope u can do it
  • @jazzi89 thank you! && I hope everything goes good for you!
