breastfeeding with implants

edited February 2011 in Breastfeeding
I nursed my first two boys for a year a piece, decided I was done having babies and got breast implants. Then I decided I wasn't done having babies;-) and I want to nurse again. Does anyone know what the odds are of successful nursing with implants? I'm terrified I wont be able to nurse again.

  • I had a mastectomy so I have implants and I can't feed but I have no breast tissue left. You need to see where they put the implants and maybe speak to the consultant that did your op x
  • Under the muscle. No removal of breast tissue. Small incision under nipple on areola. I hope everything is well and healthy with you now. I have a very young friend that went through a mastectomy.
  • I had implants last year I was told that because mine were behind the muscle and were put in under my breast I should be able to nurse. With yours being put in through the nipple u may have a harder time. I would talk to your doc but I bet u have a 50% chance u can.
  • I had my implants 4 yrs ago and had no problems.
  • I wanted mine done so badly! But I'm waiting. Haha. I looked into it and my mom had a friend who is a plastic surgeon so I basically got a free consult :P

If they go through the nipple and under the muscle you have about a 50/50 chance of breastfeeding, it depends on if there was damage to the ducts. It usually depends on how careful the dr was. You probably wont know until you try to nurse.

I myself was looking into the armpit incision, its a little longer healing time but is completely out of the way of the nipples and the can still go under the muscle. I can't wait for boobs....pretty sure kids wont make mine grow. My cousin got them done for graduation, then got preggers, now they look HORRIBLE....I feel so bad for her :/ and she couldn't nurse.
  • Ugh. That's depressing.
@Babs40 where was your incision done?
  • Mine are under the muscle and my scar is in the fold. My dr said I should be able to bf. My cousin had hers put in through the nipple. She had no problem bf at all. I think it all depends on if theirs any damaged breast tissue.
  • @jessinsc thanks hunny. I had it done at the age of 28 so kinda used to it. I really hope you can feed yourself x x
  • @jesinsc. Thanks for posting this. I thought I was done too...surprise! I had implants 7 years ago they went under my muscle and insiscion is in the fold. Breast feeding is very important to me. I have had several people tell me that people they know were successful at breastfeeding after implants but haven't talked to someone who experienced it themselves. I hope we all are successfull with breastfeeding.
  • Thanks for all the responses! I'm not feeling quite as worried about it now. And I will definitely post on how it goes:)
