How do you stay energized with no caffeine...

edited February 2011 in Pregnant
I'm a cocktail server and I usually work from around 5pm to 2am. Beofre I was pregnant, I drank coffee or redbull to keep me energized, but obviously I can't do that now. I've had shifts where I felt I was about to fall asleep. Obvious answer is change times of my shift... but when I'm tryin the most to save money, that just isn't an option as I make the most at night. My only problem, is my job is mainly personality, so if I'm tired drained and therfor am lacking a bubbly personality my tips are not as good. I need help! What's a safe, healthy, way to get more energy to make it through my shift?

  • I read one drink with caffeine a day is fine :) maybe u could get an iced coffee n sip on it just to keep u going...? Green tea doesn't have as much caffeine and its natural...
  • Maybe if u exercise a bit before going to work? That works for me sometimes as long as u don't over do it. That's the more healthy way to go I believe.
  • I have the same job and problem i asked my doctor and she said a small amount is safe and i should drink a lil just to keep my head aches away

Are you taking your prenatal? You could take an extra B complex because it is water soluble so you can't overdose. Also, eat tons of fresh fruits and veggie and drink lots of water....steer clear of refined sugar and choose your carbs wisely. Diet plays a huge part on your energy level, how you feel overall, and the development of baby. Try adding some walnut to your diet too if your not already eating them.
  • Vitamin b6 over the counter is for energy, my doc suggested it to me! Goodlu,k!
  • Naps work for me too :D
  • Drinking water and staying hydrated works for me. Im on my feet 8 to 12 hours a day.
  • I drink coffee this is my dy ourth im extreamly busy with lessons etc. u r allowed something like 250 mg per day of caffiene. I drank it through my last oregnancy too. And she is calmer than my 1st child which I did not drink coffee.
  • I meant fourth.... Darn touch screens lol
  • I have 1 cup of caffeine and wait til I'm so tired I can't take it anymore, so I feel like I get my bang for my buck *-:)

  • @op I'm exactly the same way here. I'm a bar server and just got a new job doing it. I'm terrified I wont be able to keep up as usual esp on night shifts.
My plan, maybe this will work for you... coffee does have a placebo effect, I'm going to start the work day with a hot decaf. Hot drinks give you energy, cold drinks take it away. When I start coming down tired, I'm going to switch one cup of regular hot coffee. There's just nothing else that will work lol

  • @mama_kat I only drink one coke every 4 days. I never drank caffeine before I was prego so I think I'm safe but I didn't know that. Definitely good to know!

  • I'm 33 weeks and had been pretty much cutting out the caffeine until Thursday when I went to the doc and my bp was high and I had a horrible headache. My midwife looked at me laughed and went and got me a coffee and told me I'm safe to have 3 cups... totally shocked me but I sure feel a lot better ;)
  • Thank you all, I shall try tonight
