dont get anything when i use a hand pump, is it even worth buying electric? helppp.

My daughter is 3 days old. I don't even know if my milk has come in yet. My baby can latch, she just doesn't want to work to breastfeed. She just wants a bottle. So I was going to just pump and feed her it in a bottle. But when I use my hand pump, I don't get anything! If I don't get anything then, will an electric pump make a difference?

  • Yes!!! Hand pumps suck, electric ones are awesome. It's definitely worth it. But if she will latch I'd keep her on your boob. She's probably tired still, but she'll work for it when she's hungry enough.
  • Most likely your milk hasn't came in quite yet, don't take it from me tho! Cuz I have no idea! But is it just me, our does pumping freaking hurt like hell?
  • Trust me you'll know when your milk comes in. Its painful and your boobs feel like rocks.
  • Oh and you'll know when your milk comes in, because your boob turn into bowling balls lol.
  • Like the ladies said you'll know when your milk comes in.. also electric are better.. wic will let you borrow a good one (just the motor is used) all the stuff that touches your body is new and sealed! That's what I'm using.. at first I wouldn't get anything either and I had an electric pump, it helps if she's feeding on one boob while you pump the other
  • Hell yea! Its so worth it! While in the hospital I was waiting on my milk to come in I tried a hand pump but it didn't help and then an electric pump and it took all of one minute for my milk to come out, plus its hands free.
  • Yes!! My hand pump sucks balls!! Lol. But I think I need a bigger cup for it as well. :/
  • @lily_glz the thing is, she will latch on, but she wont really eat, she'll suck for about a minute then she just stops.

Oh, I just pumped my left breast and nothing came out. But I'm pumping my right breast and I'm getting colostrum. Is it normal for one to pump stuff out and not the other?
  • Hand pumps are horrible. Even if your leaking out they won't get any! I have an evenflo pump, it was under 100 bucks and its a dual electric. It works great. I've bewn using a madela at the hospital bc were here for 10 days, and its great too. If you want to spend the money. It's very quiet and more gentle, but I'll stick with my evenflo at home. Also my milk didn't come in until late day 3. Warm compressed or hot showers, also messaging your boobies, help to bring the milk down
  • If your on the fence about an electric talk to your hospitals lactation consultant about renting one for a week or so to see how or works for you. At my my hospital its only 25$ a week
  • It's totally worth it! Ur milk is just starting to come in tho so be patient and don't give up! I get about 2-3oz with my $300 avent electric pump (my bil and sil gave it to me) and my son is 6 days old. I got spoiled with it but its totally worth it and super easy to use and clean. Much better than hand pumps!
  • Well my left boob got milk first then the morning my right came in.
  • Yea I've always gotten more out of my right breast since day one. I'm not sure why.
  • Yea I get more from my right
