how the hell am i ever gonna stock up my breastmilk?*

edited September 2011 in Breastfeeding
So I'm going back to work Sept 20th. My daughter's pediatrician told me to start pumping once a day to stock up.some milk. She also said "don't worry if you pump, and she's hungry an hour later, she'll get the milk out". Well that's not the case! I pump, and its almost like the baby knows it, cuz she gets hungry! So I wait as long as I can to feed her, but when I do, I can tell she's not getting enough cuz she gets pissed and is still hungry. So then I have to give her what I pumped in a bottle! I only have 8 oz saved up, and can't seem to keep more than that. Any advice??

  • I never got a stock pile going. I would pump at work and in the morning before work and that's what he would get till I got home that afternoon. Generally it was a workable system. We did have an emergency can of formula though
  • Maybe pump a little bit after each feeding? Even if you get a few oz at a time you can slowly build it up.
  • well dont worry, now that you are pumping each day it will eventually, and quickly stock up your milk supply. i was told to feed then pump. and to do it after morning feeding.
  • I would feed my son and then pump after he was done..at first I got very little but after a while I had enough milk to feed him on one side and pump a bottle off the other. I just had today build my supply gradually like @lilbit01_209 said
  • I've been wondering the same thing! My twins are on their way this weekend (I'm 4cm) and how in the world am I gonna stock pile? :( I'm wanting to breast feed but I have to go back to work soon too. Hope it works out well for ya! :)

    Thanks for the tips ladies!! I think I am waiting too long after she eats, so its running into her next feeding. Last night was crazy and I had to give her formula cuz the bm was already frozen. I hate formula its so nasty!!! And if she spits it up it stains everything! Yuck!! Lol

    @spray85 good luck hun! Are your twins boys or girls? You must be so excited!! :)
  • i pump the same breast after she feeds. and depending how long she sleeps and how full my breast is. i wake up to pump. my little one sleeps between 8-11 hours straight at night
  • Both are girls :) I'm excited but scared too lol
  • @proudmommy8789 Omg I'd give my right arm for 8 hrs of straight sleep! I haven't slept that long since my second trimester!! Lol how old is she?? What's your secret??

    @spray85 aww!! Names??

    I pump between 1am and 5am, that's when I get the most. And between feedings during the day. I drink Mother's Milk Tea everyday, and I get about 35 ounces per day. I bet I have atleast 100 8oz bags in the freezer.
  • I found I get the most milk right after the morning feeding. The more you pump the more your body will produce. :) Just make sure to do it right after feeding. If you wait too long the baby will be frustrated at the lack of milk. It may take a week or two for your body to adjust.
  • @fate holy crap! That's nuts!! How much of the tea do you drink?? I hate tea but I'll force it down if it works.

    @mamaof4 that's exactly what's been happening!
  • I drink a cup when I wake up and before I go to bed. I also take Fenugreek. My baby has never once got mad for lack of milk. There is always enough for her and the pump.
  • I pump after her feedings. I had a freezer full when she was in nicu. Its all gone now. Been substituting w formula some cause shes greedy and hungry all the time.
  • With my first, I pumped after every feeding AND every two hours. To ensure my milk didn't dry up. it was long and painful but so worth it
  • shes 10 weeks tomorrow and i have no secret! she started doing that her self i freaked out the first couple times. she started at around 3 weeks
