I wouldn't worry to much about it my oldest has been on it since he was 6 weeks ( he had a pooping problem and the doc told me to put him on it) and he is 2 now so I wouldn't worry about it to much!
They had Dr oz on good morning America this am and he was getting a lot of flack for his show yesterday. I would really research the facts before I stress too much over it. And any dentist will tell you that the amount of juice any kiddo gets should be minimal...the sugars Are bad for the teeth.
The show did not prove that children or adults were being poisoned from the apple juice. Dr oz was pointing out that our water supply has a 10ppm standard for arsenic but there are no regulations for apple juice. He did say if children drink it they will not get sick, unless that's all they drink 24/7.
Agree they want us to know what's going on. That being said minute made had less traces of it then our water. Motts gerber Apple & eve and juicy juice were all higher then our water.
@cute_pebbles yes he was making consumers aware. I just found the naming of this post a lil misleading I was just pointing out he did not prove that children or adults were being poisoned by it.
@caffeinated_katie I agree. My daughter does get juice on occasion that is very diluted, but mostly milk and water. NO POP! My husband is their spokesperson for no pop when they get older. He has 18 cavities that need to be fixed due to pop drinking and he brushes twice a day! They can save his teeth but they will know how daddy could've lost his teeth because of pop.
I agree with @caffeinated_Katie juice even the no sugar added still has a lot of sugar...it somehow metabolizes differently once its broken down from the actual fruit. My kiddos ages 7, 10, & 12 rarely get juice and when they do its 6oz at the most. They get the recommended amount of(skim) milk a day for their ages and then water...lots of water. Please don't think I'm judging anyone's parenting choices...our kiddos dentist and pediatrician are just anti-juice.
@addie3886 in reference to ur comment being amazed seein younger children drinkn soda, I'm the same way as u, I dnt let my kids drink soda or sweetened tea at all. My kids r stricktly water, milk, an occasion juice but my aunt who is 40smthn has a 3yr old who is aloud to hav a can of soda when ever he pleases. She put soda even in his sippy cups! I've not been a mom for as half as long as she has an I've got more common sense than that!
I totally agree with @caffeinated_katie. My daughter is 19 months old and has never had even a sip of juice as our pediatrician told us it wasn't necessary. My daughter gets whole milk and water. Juice has no nutritional value as it is mainly sugar, so its all empty calories that your chilf needs to get from REAL foods. I make sure my daughter gets 5 fruits and veggies a day. I guess you could always make your own juice, like Orange juice and it would still be considered a fruit serving. With the rising rate of childhood obesity its just not needed...those were the words of my pediatrician.
@caffeinated_katie I understand completely. Like I said my husbands teeth look great from the outside but when you see x-rays to look on the inside its bad. I want our kids to know how bad that stuff is for them.
@caffeinated_Katie I knew it was something but couldn't remember exactly. My kids are huge fruit eaters but like I said they rarely ever get juice. And we diluted that until they were 5. I have a daycare kiddo who is 2 and she comes to daycare with a full cup of juice a day and that is usually a refill as she drinks one at home too. I watched her older brothers thru the summer and they hated that e only had milk or water and none of the sugar filled cereals they were used to at home. E Are not perfect eaters at our house, but we really try to keep tons of healthy choices And teach our kid to make good food choices.
I have drank soda and juice since I was two, along side all other sorts of sugars, and I've never had a cavity. Sugar being the number one cause of tooth decay is actually the biggest myth about cavities, its the acid from bacteria that causes it...basically, lemons and.tomatoes are more prone to cause cavities. Also, you're more likely to get cavities from a lack of flossing, and also, dental issues are hereditary, just like any other health problems.
Oh, please don't listen to doctor oz, that guy is a dunce.
apple seeds have a cyanide compound in them and I have never heard of someone getting cyanide poisoning from juice *they dont core the apples for processing* or actully eating the seeds. Arsnic is much less lethal lol
But like some of you others I dont give my babies juice except very special occasions and I yell like a fishwife when my husband gives soda *not that it does any good but as long as I get my dissatisfaction across I feel better*
@caffeinated_Katie it is crazy the things you see with others parenting skills when you have a daycare. We have had parents that gave sweet tea in a bottle, soda in a sippee cup, and milked down chocolate coffee. McDonalds happy meals everyday as an afternoon snack, and one that I never understand is when a child does great on white milk switching them to chocolate or strawberry to the point that they wont touch the white milk anymore. Why????? Ugh! Not that I'm the perfect parent, but some things to me are just common sense. That same parent caters to everything her daughter wants...so at home she basically eats chicken nuggets, hot dogs, or grilled cheese and fruit. She wont eat any veggies or anything new...except here. We were firm with her on trying things and she eats here fine. No forcing just taking the time to encourage. A little more work but a healthier child makes it worth it.
I just want to say I hate TV shows and media for these kinds of reasons..... 100+ years ago things were much different and we are still here today! Js! I would not jump to say we are getting poisoned nor would I stop giving my kid juices just because of this. I mean who's to say they know what kind of arsenic it is? Its not like they are putting rat poison in juices, for all you know it's an organic compound arsenic. "Poisons" like arsenic cyanide acids etc are found naturally in everyday things. They blow up things out of proportion for TV and ratings and scare people to death... I can guarantee that you AND your children come into contact with much worse things on a regular basis.
Almonds have cyanide! bananas are radioactive! Stop eating them! ..... :-@
