Who used nipple shields and What do you know about them?!?

edited October 2011 in Breastfeeding
My daughter was born preemie and was in NIcu so she never got the chance to latch on for a while, shes almost a month and we are trying to get her to latch now that we are home and every time she is hungry I make her try and latch, she might take a few sucks then tosses her head away.
I bought a nipple shield and used it for the first time last night and it was amazing! It kept her on the whole time! Then I read online that its recommended that you don't use them... Any ideas why? What is bad about them and why should I stop using them?

  • My daughter is 9 weeks, 95% breastfed and has never taken the boob without a nipple shield. As long as she is getting the milk, I will continue to use the shield BUT I find it works best if the shield is wet (water) when you put it on so it sticks to your skin real good almost like its sealed so no milk drops out. If its not stuck on real good milk can leak out and your baby can end up being hungry still when you are done feeding. Hopes this helps, I use a medela shield btw.
  • I used one because my baby was having trouble latching on - causing very sore and cracked nipples. I only had to use it for 2 days though. The nurse I got it from told me that some people use it throughout breastfeeding. I don't think it should be a problem. To seal it, use some lanolin cream around the outside of the nipple (the areola NOT on the nipple itself)
  • I used the shield with my first baby for the first week or 2. I read that it can interfere with milk production though if used for long periods
  • I use one. My babys almost 6 weeks old now. I love it. She was having trouble latching. They said to try to get her to latch without it. And she will. But only for a min then she gives up if she unlatches. Its probobly frustating to them if they are having latching problems and theh are hungry. Thats why the give up on us. So I just use it 24/7 I feel bad cuz she gets sooo frusterated without it.
  • I use one cuz I have inverted nipples.. it wrks an baby gets what he needs. My friends breastfed her son exclusively for the 1st yr and she used her shield the whole yr of nursing him without any problems at all. Sme say its harder for baby to empty the breast when using a shield but evrybody I've talks to hasn't had any problems while using it
  • My son wasnt latching, now I use the shields and he latches on the first try. My lactation consultant gave me mine, I love it and have never heard anything bad. I say if it works use it!
  • I had to use them, my son latched fine at 1st, but then after his stay in the nursery the 2 nights at the hospital they introduced the paci & wouldnt latch afterwards. Been using them at every feeding, its the only way he will! He will be 4 wks thursday
  • I've used one since my son was a couple days old and he's 4 months now. He just started latching on without it but he still gets frustrated sometimes so I put it on so he doesn't get upset. He's never had a problem emptying my breasts and it hasn't lowered my supply. His doctor and nurses always said to wean him off it but I didn't see a reason to because he was getting the milk and I wasn't going to let him get frustrated trying to eat if he didn't have to.
  • I use them on both breasts! Hes been using them for 2 wks--hes 3 wks now. I have tried to get him to latch without them in the last few days but he goes back to only sucking on the nipple. He is eating very well...I will continue to try without the shield but of course if hes hurting me and hes not eating then we'll continue to use the shields.

  • The problem causing shields were the older ones not the ones that we have now. I did tons of research.. I use them and love them!
  • @doodles what kina shield r u using? I use the medela brand. They evn come in sizes now
  • I am using the medela. @breewashington08
  • @ashleyfew I thought they only cause mestisis and thrush if the breast are not being emptied? And I pump as well because she was so used to bottle and I like having a bottle ready at night. I pump after every feeding so I know I am empty. Would I still have those problems because of the shield?
  • I am using the avent ones. But I also bought the medela. I've just been trying because I just started using the shield last night(: I love them already though, they are a life saver and I don't think I could have continued to breastfeed without them just because pumping and washing all the bottles was a lot harder than just nursing or bottle feeding. LOVE THEM<3
    @breewashington08

    Thanks everybody!!
  • I use one, my daughter is 9 wks old. She can latch without it sometimes but she ends up getting frustrated so I kept using it. We're fine and my daughter is getting plenty of milk. When I pump I get like 8 oz total :)
  • My baby was tongue tied when born and I've been pumping since. We got her ferenulum (so) clipped at one week (two days ago) and while she can now stick out her beautiful tongue, she is having.g serious issues patching. My hubby got me the tommy tippie shields this morning and I have had two successful bouts of breast feeding today! Hopefully we do.t gave to use too long, but it is giving her the bridge confidence to transition (it seems) from bottle to boob. Hoping!!!
  • @jellybelly1015 awh, I'm so happy for you and your little girl! I feel the exact same way and am soo happy that Rylie could nurse today! It was an amazing feeling and was so stress free thanks to the shield!! (:
  • Lol!!! My sweetie is Rileigh!!! :) such a wonderful thing, I cried... Doing that a lot with her. Glad you are having stress free feeding too now!!! :)
