pacifiers while breastfeeding?

How long should you wait to give a breastfeeding baby a pacifier?

  • I read/heard a month. I gave my daughter one at a little over three weeks. I noticed she always wanted to suck on things even when not hungry. She would suck on her own hands and peoples fingers. I had not had any breastfeeding problems so I gave it a try. She is very happy with her paci and still feeds very well. :)
  • My baby is breastfed and he's been on one since day 1. It doesn't affect him at all.
  • Mine got his at about 3 days old and still nurses fine!
  • I was told 6 weeks to avoid nipple confusion but looks like some mommies have had luck with sooner
  • thanks @everyone ! My baby seems to want to bf allll the time so Im thinking maybe she just wants to suck? Shes 8 days old now. I might wait another week though :)
  • My girl is 3 1/2 wks and I broke down and face her one just before 2 wks. My lactation nurse said its best to wait 3 wks but its rare babies to get nipple confusion with pacifiers.
  • I gave my son one right away, he preferrs his hands tho, doesnt really like his bink all that much. My boobs make a better binki than anything tho... cept he pukes a lot lol
  • Im waiting till about 6 weeks. I have flat nipples and we still.struggle a bit at getting a proper latch going. Once I feel comfortable with the latch ill give him one
  • I gave my son a pacifier at 2 days and haven't had any problems
  • My son is three days old & I gave him one last night. So far it doesnt seem to be causing any problems with breast feeding him.
  • My baby wont take hers really and I bf her, she will just make a funny face and spit it out
  • I gave my son one since day 1 and he nurses just fine he's now 9 days old
  • @squirt299 mine does the same :)
  • as long as they have a good latch.. its fine.. i gave mine one at two days .. nothing comes out so theres no food confusion.. lol..
  • My daughter was in the NICU and they gave her a paci as soon as the cord was cut in the operating room. I think it's fine and the nipple on the paci is so different from bottles because nothing comes out of them.
