HELP!! Need help house training new puppy!! (npr)

edited October 2011 in Just for Fun
Bd and I got my mom a puppy (1 yr old) for her birthday. The people we got her from told us she was house trained but failed to tell us they stopped making her go outside and switched her to training pads because they worked a lot.. so she thinks it's okay to go to the bathroom on all of the rugs.. we take her outside constantly, take her for walks, leave her out there by herself, but she just doesn't go, then as soon as we let her back inside she goes on a rug.. I don't know what to do with her, we don't have a fence so we can't leave her outside all day, she's been outside tied to a stake on a long leash for almost an hour and she just barks.. she hates being left along, does anyone have any advice? Help me!!!

  • Does she do it on the carpet or just rugs? If its just rugs id pick them all up so she doesn't have that option then take her outside.
  • With our dogs we kept them on a strict potty schedual and they eventually just understood that's when they potty. I think we took them out to potty every couple of hours and would tell them "go pee" or "go poop", just some kind of repetetive verbal cue. One of my neighbors used say "football" and the dog would go poop on command. Potty training takes a lot of time and patience, don't worry, it'll happen. I know how frustrating potty training can be.

I'd buy the potty pads. And just keep moving them closer n closer to the door until you can move them outside. But I would definitely pick up all other rugs so she doesn't get confused
  • @sara102011 she goes on the carpet too but mostly the rugs

@breandalou she won't even go when we're outside, we'll sit out there forever and she'll just run around, she waits until we're back in the house

@blessedbe_x3 that's what someone suggested, the rug she's been going on is right next to the door
  • I Agree with @brendalou. Take them outside even if you don't think they got to potty. Mine will have accidents from time to time but that's if I sleep to late. With my puppy I got last christmas I was letting her out every hr. If she pottyd in the house we spanked her and put her nose in it told her bad dog. Now she tells me when she has to go outside lol. I also get my two dogs hyped up before going outside . I'm like do you need to go potty. Or do you need to go outside over and over again. They go crazy lol. Oh when they potty outside praise the dog tell he/she good girl or good boy.
  • Rent a rug doctor to get rid of the smell. gate off any areas you don't want the dog to potty at. When I lived with my grandma we had to gate off the hallway to the bedrooms because her male dog would lift his leg.
  • First, clean all of the urine thoroughly from the house. If she smells the urine she will keep assuming that its okay to go to the bathroom in the house. After you take care of that, keep a close watch on her. If she starts going poty in the hosue pick her up and take her outside to finish. When she finished, give her a treat and start telling her how good she is and stuff. Just keep taking her outside often and keep treats with you all the time.

Or, you could put up all the rugs in the house and put a puppy pad by the door for her to use. Give her treats when she does. Then slowly transition it outside. Then once shes used to it being outside just remove it. Then she will understand that she needs to go outside. Also, keep giving her treats so she knows that she is being good! :) Sometimes dogs are just stubborn and dont listen, so you might need to use a little discipline! I hope you find something that works for you though!
  • Ceaser Milan, the dog whisperer. He's awesome. His site and shows work wonders!
  • I don't like the use of puppy pads it gives thee the ok to potty in the house. My mom use to breed poodles and chiauaua or however you spell it . And I notice she had hard time with keeping her dogs trained because of the pads. My puppy was house trained by 4mths. I've really thought about opening a business dealing with training dogs. my puppy is almost yr old and she is potty trained, she can fetch and bring it back , she can sit. My poodle I have she is potty trained, she can sit, give you highfives. I wish you best of luck.
  • What does npr stand for?
  • What I did with my dog was take him out every hr and if he didn't go he went in his kennel. And just do that til he went. And when he did go lots and lots of praise and a special treat whether it be a cookie or a walk.
  • I also recommend crate training.
