gestational diabetes diet help please!

edited October 2011 in Pregnant
I'm on vacation and the doctor called and let me know I failed my 3 hour test. When I go home in 3 weeks ill get the thing to monitor my blood sugar and get nutritional monitoring. So what should my diet be like? How many cards, sugars, ect. Just cause I wanna be better for these 3 weeks.

  • I have gd as well but it hard to explain. I would look up a diabetic carbs chart so u know what u can have as far as carbs are concerned. For breakfast I can have 1 to 2 carbs which normally is a piece of toast with pb and a yogurt. Like I could have 2 to 3 carbs. Dinner is 3 to 4 and a snack before bed 1 to 2 again. Make sure u eat a lot of protein because it won't effect your carb intake and will leave u fuller longer.
  • Thank you so much! You reccomend any meal types?
  • For breakfast and lunch, is about 30 carbs(u will see them on the back of the food containers) and dinner is 45-60. U also get 3 snacks between meals and one after dinner and they should be about 15 carbs. Like @kailiasmomma05 said, Make sure u have protein with each meal and snack. Even if its just peanut butter or a cheese stick. I don't have gestational, but I am a diabetic. This should help you
  • aand I just try to avoid excess breads, pasta, potatoes, and starches. also fruit is very sugary, so watch Ur fruit intake.
  • I eat a lil of chicken. Chicken salads are good. The leafy greens and chicken are really good for u. I eat a lot of string cheese. Tuna fish. There's a lot of stuff but I'm having pregnancy brain.

  • Limit carbs. Eat every 2 hrs 15g total carbs=1 carb. So break fast and snack eat 2 carbs( toast, egg, and 1 cup milk) lunch 4 carbs. Read labels and look at total carbs. Eat chicken fish and lots of veggies. You rly just have to eat smaller portions of carbs more often if that makes sense. Once you get home you'll see a dietitian and nurse educator and they will go over how to count carbs what foods have them and the numbers you need to stay with in. Its simple once you get the hang of it.
  • @myressa2011 OHHHHH!!!!! That makes a lot of sense. When I first talked to her, I heard her say 1 carb... and I was really confused because everything has more than 1 carb in it lol I had nooo idea that 15g of carbs equaled 1 carb! thank you :) I fell kinda retarded now! The specialist from the hospital is going to give me a call today and help me out! lol I'm gonna be gone for 3 weeks and my family is extremely worried now!
  • @usafwife_21 no problem. I said the same thing but just stick with reading labels. Try googling a list of the amount of carbs in fruits bread pasta so you know how much to eat.
