My baby has a lazy eye :/

edited November 2011 in Babies Health
She's almost a month and I know their eyes aren't strong yet, but I've noticed the past few days that it's the same eye, it'll look at you and the slowly go to the side. it runs strong on my husbands side of the family (i have nothing against lazy eyes I just didn't want my baby to have it). I guess this is more of a vent, everytime I bring it up to hubby he gets hurt (his sister has a lazy eye). Everyone wants their kids to be perfect right? I feel bad that i'm freaking out about it, i'll love her no matter what. I'm just worried she'll get picked on, kids are mean. i'm gonna start saving up for the surgery just in case. I didn't post this to hurt anyones feelings

  • @amab13 you are my new favorite person :)
  • my son's eyes will go all crazy sometimes and he's 2 months old. like totally be pointing in opposite directions lol it's normal but idk at what point their eye muscles are supposed to be under their control...
  • It runs on my bf's side of the family too. His other son has it pretty bad but if you catch it early you can get the glasses to help correct it to avoid surgery but don't feel bad... I'm scared our son will have it too bc I've noticed the same! They said if it's rarely happening then it's just that his eye muscles aren't fully developed and to wait a little while, it should correct itself. :(
  • My siblings both have/had ( one deceased ) lazy eye. My brother had it real bad and we couldn't tell untill he was 4. My sister has it too but it stays straight and normal more often than my brothers did. We started to tell with her at 7. I'd say don't freak out just yet.:) I thought my daughter had it as well just a few weeks ago, I also got a bit sad knowing how my brother was picked on. My daughter seems fine now at 5 weeks. It still maybe a possibility but I think we won't see real lazy eye symptoms till much later like my brother at 4 years old.
  • Thanks everyone! now baby I can keep my mouth shut for my husbands sake
  • It's too early to know if your baby has a lazy eye, hopefully his muscle is still developing.
My son had it but his eyes were normal until he was 3. I got him glasses at three and it corrected itself. In fact dr said that his eyesight keeps improving & thinks by next year he wont need glasses at all. He's 14.
  • Its still early my nephew daddy had one so wen my nephew was a baby he had a lazy eye to but over time it went back to normal I guess u can say, he's 4 now & has no lazy eye!
  • I have a lazy eye. Its very bad. If your baby has one do not hesitate to get it corrected. My parents didn't try very hard and now I'm going to be blind eventually in that eye. I could get the surgery now but it would be considered cosmetic BC how damaged my eye sight is. And I would have to pay out of my pocket for it. Being an adult it could take more then one surgery to correct
  • I thought with true lazy eye, if caught early, they can put a patch over the strong eye to strengthen the lazy eye. I could be wrong though.
  • My daughter had the same thing. Now she doesn't. It will go away most likely
  • I have a lazy eye. I wore a patch when I was younger and that helped a lot. Also lots of eye exercises, and I had quite a few funny looking arts and crafts from kindergarten due to them dialing my eyes. All worth it! Once baby is old enough to truly diagnose just do what you can to strengthen it. Good luck!
  • I just talked to my Dr. about this. She said after 6 months if babies eyes still cross then its an issue. Up until then their eye muscles aren't strong yet
  • Eye patches didn't help me. I know ppl who they have helped and they are miracle workers if they help. But being so early on odds are it will correct itself.
  • My son has one too, but i expected it. My dad, brother, and i all have one.
  • My hubby has it and I had it (parents had me do eye excercises) it looks like Lila has It too. We brought it up
to her pediatrician (at her 6 mo well baby) and she referred us to a children's eye doctor.

We went in he examined her, dilated her eyes, we had to wait half an hour so bring toys, wipes to wipe of the 'interesting' toys in the office [unless you're smarter then me and think to block them from sight :-S ] and any other supplies you may need.

After he dialated her eyes (and we weighted) he examined her again and also took a quick look at mine and hubby's eyes (not an exam just a look) and decided that there is a good chance she will have a lazy eye too but informed us to wait until she was 9 months to be sure so we scheduled another appointment.

He informed us that we might need to get her glasses to correct it but there is a fair chance, since we caught it so young, it can be corrected with eye therapy. Basically have her look at certain things at certain angles without turning her head. :)

Her follow up is on December 1st. If you like I can update you on what happens.
