blocked tear duct ? (only one eye)

edited November 2011 in Babies Health
My daughter has what I believe is a blocked tear duct & has goop in her eye every time I clean it, I used breast milk, I washed it off with warm water, what can I do ? any other newborns with this problem?

  • My almost 2yr old daughter has "a blocked tear duct" or so her pedi says I've tried everything including medicines and its been happening since the day she was born, goopy like hell, my advice is take her to an eye doctor
  • Basically warm water on a wash cloth is all u can do. Like previous poster stated see a physician if it persists. My youngest had it and a few days of warm compresses unclogged it.
  • My daughter has it too. She is 7 weeks. Her doc gave me a medicine called vigamox. Its helping a little bit. She said to massage the inner part of her eye towards the nose to try and open the duct. But to wipe it with a warm washcloth when its goopey
  • The massage as @brittneymcgrew explained will help.
  • My son is 3 months. His Dr said to go warm wash cloths and to massage the duct s few times a day...
  • @mommyofsoon2b3 @kailiasmomma05 @brittneymcgrew @mom2be @augustbaby thanks! She is only 11 days old. And its only started today, so I'm not too concerned. I've done all of the above, and if it continues I'm gonna tell her doctor at her Wednesday appt.
  • The important thing to remember to massage towards the nose because if not the goop will continue to get back in the eye. I hope it gets better!
  • My son had it too they told me to rub the upper side of the nose next to his eye. And do it several times a day and do the warm wash cloth to clean the goo. It fixed nicholas in a week or so.
