Anyone on progestrone?

edited February 2011 in First Trimester
My dr. put me on progestrone to help reduce the chance of a miscarriage. Since I started taking it, I've had some brown spotting. Has this happened to anyone else?

  • Im on it but I didn't have any spotting. How low is your progesterone?
  • I'm on it but no spotting here? I do notice that I get strong stomach aches after taking it? My level was I think 9.8 at 4wks. Is that low?
  • No spotting, but my doctor told that they usually like to see the levels higher than 20, I was 18.5. I have m/c twice so this time he decided to put me on. Does anyone not feel pregnant? I have no symptoms! Kinda scared.
  • I was put on progesterone at 5W. My level then was at 11. I am not 7W 4D. I haven't had my levels rechecked but I have had no spotting or cramping. I had a miscarriage about a year ago and have pcos so they put me on the progesterone as a precaution.
  • I went for a check up and it turns out that the spotting was from my cervix. It was just a coincidence that it started around the same time as I started taking progestrone. But the doctor said everything looks ok.
  • Im on it till im 12 wks i had a m/c last yr so my doc put me on it to reduce the chance of m/c im 9w5d and i havent had any bleeding or anything like that. I highly recommend u to take them. They give me no side effect symptoms. Good luck and lots of blessings to you and ur bby
  • I took it as well and did have brown spotting for about two days or so. I was freaked out since before I had two back to back m/c... Dr said not to writer unless it becomes very crampy and/or thr spotting turns red. I was about 9-10 weeks then. I' almost 16 weeks now with no issue.
  • I am on 100 mg of progesterone daily also. Prescribed following 3 miscarriages in the last 6 months. No spotting but horrible morning sickness, which I did have before starting it. I just can't help but believe that it is making it that much worse. I am about 8 weeks. How long is it usually prescribed for? I am out next week, and am hoping I am almost done with it!!!
  • They usually prescribe it through first trimester... I'm on 100mg twice daily vaginal suppositories.. they are a pain.
  • I was on it with my last...my level was extremely low wana say 5...i was on it till 20 weeks...it made me sick and retain water bad.
  • Im relieved to see so many people on here that are also on progesterone... it was scary when they put me on it! Has anyone found any research on how many births make it full term while on the supplements... I have looked every where and can't find anything..
  • I start today with progesterone, due to previous m/c as well. My levels are only slightly low, but they are doing everything they can to help this one go full term.
  • My doc took me off at 10 weeks. I am so thankful for the meds, b/c they may have saved my pregnancy, but I am so looking forward to the reduction in nausea, as slight as it might be! That stuff made me sick!
  • Reading all of your comments makes me even more nervous, I can't figure out why my doc isn't starting me on progesterone! My last level was 4.7! I am 6 weeks along and I feel like I'm just sitting around waiting to miscarry :( I called my nurse yesterday & she said they don't start replacement unless you've miscarried in the past! What? This makes no sense to me! I feel like I'm getting no answers, can anyone help? Sounds like a lot of you are taking replacement & your level is much higher than mine?
  • @bailey...I would call another doctor and se what they say. It can't hurt to get a second opinion. And I know women that have no history of miscarriage and were put on it, so push for it if you have to after talking to another doctor, or even switch, if you need to. Good luck!
  • @Bailey I haven't had a miscarriage and I am on it. 200 mg twice daily suppositories. My levels were at 15.5 last week and they immediately put me on the suppositories. I'm going in this Thursday to test my levels again. They are a pain but its better to be safe than sorry. I would Def try another Dr bc if my dr is as aggressive with treating my 15.5, you would think 4.7 should also be treated. Hope this helps
  • Thanks guys! This does help! I am calling another clinic on Monday for a second opinion! Strange isn't it? I'll let you guys know what I find out!
  • @tnt2007, @redhead25, @Gods2ndplan Well I called another clinic today for a second opinion. The nurse spoke with the doctor, called me back and had me come right in! Finally someone was listening! (regarding my low progesterone). He did a transvag u/s but was having difficulties even finding my uterus? Weird...and just my luck. He ordered an HCG and progesterone level, and I will have another HCG in 2 days. He also ordered a regular u/s for tomorrow. Now I'm wondering...wouldn't it be too soon to see anything? I am 6w3d....however, I have a long cycle & ovulate late so I feel that the babe would be more at 5w3d development. Either way, I'm glad I'll get some answers. Praying that baby is still there....and then I WILL be switching doctors. Oh yeah, and this doctor started me on vaginal progesterone. Still baffled as to why this doc was concerned but not my primary. So frustrating and scary.
  • @baileygoose that's awesome that u r finally being taken care of! Good luck with the ultrasound. My first one is scheduled on the 31st...I'm so excited! It's a vaginal one and I've never had one before...any advice?
  • @redhead25 thanks...I had a regular ultrasound yesterday and then the u/s tech also did a transvag because she couldn't really see much on the first u/s, but she didn't really say much (scary), just that the radiologist would read it and my doc would go over it....so I will find out today if there's still a baby in there :(
The vaginal u/s aren't bad...I just had to pee really bad when the u/s technician did the 2nd one and she kept pressing on my bladder...ahhh! So pee first! But really, they're not bad, don't be worried. Good luck! I hope things go great for you! I'll try & let you know how today turns out....sigh.
  • Actually, don't per first. It's uncomfortable, but having a full bladder helps them to see things in the ultrasound better.
  • Aaagh...stupid auto correct. Per=pee.
  • @ tnt2007 for the regular ultrasound I had to have a full bladder, but for the transvaginal ultrasound she had me pee first and then began. I think it's just for a regular ultrasound that you need a full bladder.
  • @tnt2007, @redhead25, @Gods2ndplan
Good news! Still preggers :) My progesterone level has gone from 4.7 to 36, HCG level doubled in 48 hours, but ultrasounds are just measuring me behind at 5w2d, according to my last period I was 6w5d, but this explains why they had a hard time seeing much on the u/s. They did see the gestational sack and yolk sack, but no fetal pole yet...too early they said, no worries!Thank God! We are celebrating tonight!
  • Yayayayayayayayayayayayayayayayayayayayayayayayayauayay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • @baileygoose awesome news! I'm at 5 wks 3 days so were right at the same point. I've had a regular ultrasound before and had to have a full bladder but they didn't tell me whether I should have a full bladder for the transvaginal ultrasound or not.
  • Thanks everyone!!! Oh happy day!
@redhead25 Nope, no full bladder, this was my second and did not need a full bladder either time :)
@Gods2ndplan My HCG level this past Monday was 3,245 and today (2 days later) was 5,276. Doctor just said that they like it to rise by 50% in 48 hours so he said it was all good :) I explained that wrong in my above post, I said doubled, I meant 50% increase...you know what I mean anyways!
  • Im on progesterone too! Im 8w4d my level was 5 . I go back for us next week.I recently had two mc this past year. Goodluck ladies.. ill pray for you.
