Beer and breastfeeding

edited January 2012 in Breastfeeding
I'm confused about beer and breastfeeding. How should I go about doing it. Do I pump and dump? It seems counterproductive if that's the case. If anyone has used this method to increase your supply, please let me know exactly what you did. Thanks in advance. Btw I hate beer lol :-D

  • You can just get brewers yeast. Lol. You don't actually have to drink beer. But if you do, pump and dump.
  • For one beer u don't have to pump and dump drink it then 2 hr later milk is fine also babys r us has testing strips don't waste something ur working hard for
  • I have a quiet beer most weekends with bd, its not to intentionally increase my supply, but it sure as hell works, I always wake up engorged. Either have a drink directly after a feed so im in the clear for the next one 2-3 hours later or I do it after her bedtime feed then I know I have 6-8 hours till next feed
  • Pumping and dumping does nothing. The alcohol filters out of your milk as it leaves your blood stream. So, generally speaking, an hour a beer. Of course everybody metabolizes alcohol differently.
  • My Dr told me that after an hour or so your good so no need to pump and dump. I don't really like beer but if I make myself drink one after I put little man to bed and right before I go to sleep, I'll wake up engorged. For example last night I drank a beer at 11:30 woke up at 7:15 and pumped out 10oz after bf my son.
  • It has to be a dark beer. I'm coming around to blue moon, it's not that terrible.

  • Tish how arre you? :)
  • These ladies are correct. You don't have to pump and dump...just wait two hours to bf after having a beer it will be out of your system. :)
  • Thanks ladies. I hate beer ewwwwwww!!!!! But I'm trying to build up my supply for when I'm at the office.
@txmommy93011, I'm good hun. New Year, new goals lol. How're things with you? Are you breastfeeding?

  • No I was. Lol I'm good so is baby.how's princess?
  • if you're into baking you can make beer bread. It bakes out the alcohol but you still get the yeast and its yummy.
Also, I got much better results from it then from drinking (though drinking is nice too lol)
I wish I had the directions but a friend had made it for me. She said she found it in a box though, so I'm sure you can find it at your local grocery store.
  • @TishJ330 It's the hops in beer that boost breast milk production. So, the more hops the better. You can find craft beers that are double or triple hopped...but the alcohol content is also higher. Here is a link explaining how it works. :)

  • @RileyAndMe I'd never heard of it before until pregly & I really don't like beer but I wanted to increase my supply so I tried it and it really does work.
@littleFae too bad you don't have that recipe. Beer is gross but I'll do anything to keep my supply.

  • You guys are so awesome! Thanks!!!
@txmommy93011 this little princess is the reason I'm obsessed with building my supply lol. I got the Essure done Monday so she's it for me. Just trying to do everything right lol. How's your 2012 going?
  • @LittleFae do you still have to wait the 2 hours before feeding?
  • Lady, just drink some good old supermalt and you don't have to dump nothing. Simples!
  • The herbs that @AwesomeJen wa taking about in that article are in the mothers milk tea...inn starting it tomorrow
  • My 2012 is going good so far. Baby is teething already :( how's your older daughter doing with Victoria? Jessica right? Lol I'm bad with names :)
  • @1106krystal no,baking gets rid of the alcohol but you still get the effects of thw hops and.yeast from the beer. No wprries about having to wait :)
  • Oh I have a box of the beer bread..I never thought of that @littlefae...not that I need to increase...just keeping it up. I know tastefully simple sells it in a box & its tasty lol

Also the beer bread can be made with pop...anything carbinated, but that obviously doesn't help your supply.
