Glucose tollerance screening

edited February 2011 in Pregnant
I took the 1 hour glucose test and did not fast per the instructions of my doctor. I ended up borderline high so they want to do the 3 hour test now.... my concern is, after reading on several forums it seams most people fast for even the 1 hour test but my doc advised me not too....did any of you take this test and if so, did you fast?

  • I took the 3hr test cuz I was boarderline as well my apt was at 8am so they had me fast from midnight till I went in. Wasn't too big of a deal cuz I could have water. But let me tell ya I was a grouchy bear by the time I got thru ;)
  • I ate before mine and it was still normal. Kinda weird cuz I've been gaining a lot of weight lately
  • yeah I ate cocoa pops get results wed but I'm sure its fine its my 3rd time wasting an hr of my life lol
  • I haven't gained an abnormal amount (27 lbs so far and I'm 31 weeks) and my baby has been weighing in slightly under weight so I'm not showing signs. Do you mind me asking what your levels came back at? I was at 152 but again, I had honey flax cereal with almond milk 3 hours before the test and some spinach dip and crackers with a side if sweet potatoes about 1/2 hour before the test....
  • I'm here now at the lab taking the 3 hour test. already did the 1 hour drawing...still have 2 more to go....ugggg. I'm worried about what my results will be like.... I haven't eaten since about 8:30 pm last night.... I hope it turns out ok. I will get my results on Wednesday.
  • @ mommy2 how far along are you and how much have you gained?
  • I don't remember anything about fasting with my first 2 and my dr didn't say anything about it thise time but my apt is at 830 tomorrow morning. It can't be done fast enough
  • I did the 1 hour test doc said fasting level was normal but after I did the sugar solution the test an hour later was elevated. So no I have to go back and do the next test, doc said its 2 hours, so gah! I was so mad afgter the one hour I cried, I'm dreading this 2 hours :(
  • I have mine tomorrow @ 9:30. Dr. said I could eat breakfast but to stay away from foods with sugar. We'll see how it goes!
  • @earthmoma I'm 30wks now and have have gained almost 25lbs, I was on the average to small side before being prego
  • @ JBut201 don't forget to stay away from crabs too. I would stick with scrambled eggs and nothing more. Just to hold you over.
  • 25 lbs is not bad at 30 weeks. I too was small/ average and doc said she expected me to gain about 35 lbs total. The last month and a half you usually gain 1 lb per week. I'm 31 weeks and have gained 27 lbs so far so I might go over 35 lbs just a little.
  • I just finished the 3 hour glucose test.....it wasn't fun! I'm thirsty and hungry and have a massive headache. on top of it, my veins weren't too cooperative so I got stuck with a total of 6 needles. And that glucosa syrup was nasty and thick!! I'm glad its done. I get the results Wednesday.
  • Test results came back....picture perfect. Yay.
  • I took it & never had to fast. My food intake wasn't a concern for my OB. My test came bk normal
  • Oh & Congrats to you! :-)
  • My test came back normal! =D
  • JBut2011 congrats on passing! did you fast?
  • I didn't eat anything the morning on my 1hr as it was first thing, but had to fast 12hrs for my 3hr. Turns out my sugars were way too high and was diagnosed with gestational diabetes. It's not too bad, just sucks having to prick my finger 6 times a day!
  • Ok this might be a silly question.. but does everyone have to take the one hr test.. I was jw this is my first pregnancy lol
  • @mommatobe Yes.... just depends on signs/symptoms as to when they test. Can't remember what the usual time is, but I was tested at 22 wks cause they found glucose spilled out in a urine test.
  • @sgthalesbabies what exactly do they do?
  • It's only a blood test. You arent suppose to have anything to eat right b4 the test. They give you a drink of pure glucose and you have 15min to drink it all in that time frame. Then u go back an hour later and they draw bloodwork to test your sugar levels. For the 3hr you have to drink another glucose drink and they'll draw blood 4 times for that one, but you you have to take the 3 hr unless your one hour is high.
  • @earthmama- no I didn't fast. I ate scramble eggs and water for breakfast.

They told me I had to drink it all in 2 mins. I had the fruit punch flavor and it wasn't bad at all.
  • You do not have to fast before the hour test, but you are not supposed to eat any sweets or anything that's high in sugar before or it will tamper with the results. I've always had normal results with both my girls. One test was at 8am last week and all I ate before was some toast and my first was at 2pm and I ate normal just nothing high in sugar or "sweet" because my doctor informed me that will mess with your results. That's why they have you fast for the 3 hour test, is sobyou can't tamper with the results in any way.
  • Sweets aren't the only problem. Carbs are what effect your glucose levels.
  • Ok to answer all posts...yes, everyone takes the 1 hour test. If you fail the 1 hour test you will then have to take the 3 hour test. The test is a simple blood test...they give you a highly concentrated sugar drink called glucosa which comes in a variety of flavors (but in my opinion is nasty no matter what flavor you get). The morning of the test (and my suggestion is the night prior as well) you want to stay away from carbohydrates and sugary foods. Drink plenty of water because you will be asked to refrain from drinking water before and during the test because it will dilute the glucosa substance which would give you inaccurate results. When you get to the lab you drink the glucosa within a 2 minute timeframe (its best to just hold your nose and down it as quick as possible). Then you will be asked to sit in the waiting room for exactly 1 hour. During that time the techs will be keeping an eye on you for potential side effects such as vomiting, nausea, headache, or more serious could be diabetic shock. You cannot eat or drink anything during the hour. Once the hour is up they draw your blood and you are then free to go. What they are checking for is to see what your glucose level is after 1 hour of drinking the glucosa. Normal levels should be 140 or less. Anything above that you will have to take the 3 hour test. Basically, they are checking to see if you have gestational diabetes. The test is usually performed between your 24th and 26th week of pregnancy but can be done earlier if you show signs and symptoms. Some people have had it done as late as 28 weeks. Gestation diabetes is different from other kinds of diabetes because it may go away after the baby is born. It is caused by hormones created during pregnancy. In some cases, it can lead to different types of diabetes if left untreated which is why it is important to get tested for it. It can also cause complications in the remainder of your pregnancy and can effect your baby.... there are different ways to treat it. Treatment depends in your levels and what proteins were elevated. It will vary from person to person. It could be as simple ad a change in diet or more serious to where you have to take insulin shots until after baby is born and your levels return to normal (if they do....)
  • I am getting my glucose test this week and I am only 12 weeks...seemed a little early to me...has anyone else had theirs this early? After reading all of this I am not looking forward to this at all!!
  • I'm gettin mines done next week they told me not eat or drink two hours before my appointment...we will see how that goes
  • Ashly, there may be a reason you are getting yours done so early....either history, or you are showing signs and symptoms. I'd ask the doctor. It could also just be your doctors common practice to test this early. As for the test itself, the 1 hour isn't bad at all....just be sure to take my advice from previous posts because you want to try to avoid the 3 hour test if you can. Good luck.
