do you have to get a catheter if you have an epidural?

If so, do they do out while you are numb or do you feel it?

  • No you don't. Well defo in the UK you don't. X x
  • No Ohio here had 2
  • Yes you do well that's my hospitals policy..and yes after your numb. I've gotten 3 epidurals and getting one with this one as well
  • Here u do too.
  • I didn't have one. I think it might sometimes depend on when you get it. I didn't get one until I started pushing so they weren't concerned with me having to use the restroom I guess. But if you get it in the earlier stages of labor they might put one in because you won't be allowed to get up to pee.
  • I've had two children and with both I had to have a catheter inserted. I believe its mainly due to the fact that if like pebbles stated u get the epidural early you still have a ways to go and you won't be able to walk to go to the restroom so you gotta go somehow plus sometimes your so numb you won't even feel like you gotta go but little do you know ur bladder is full and both times I had it inserted after I was numb but my sister in law actually had it inserted before. I suggest you just request for them to insert it after your numb I mean its ur body u have the right to speak ur mind.
  • I live n Louisiana yu hve 2 & dea will do it afta ur epidural.
  • I got an epidural with both my kids and had a catheter only with my son but I was n labor with him 4 15 hours. Didnt need one with my daughter I got an epidural a little bit b4 she was born. Not by choice cause every time I asked 4 the epidural he was doing someone elses.
  • I had an epideral with my first and had a catheter insert after I was numb because you can't tell when you need to go or not plus you are numb and wouldn't be able to walk. My friend had her baby two weeks ago and had hers inserted after her epideral, the part that sucks was her epideral wasn't working and she felt the whole thing! Poor girl. Haha.
