babys stomach on wrong side

edited March 2012 in Pregnant
my names jessica and this is my 2nd pregnancy and I'm 25 weeks along. my regular doctor has had me have 3 different ultrasounds and they said they weren't sure if my baby had a stomach or not so they sent me to a different town yesterday to see an ultrasound specialist and they confirmed that my baby girl has "abdominal situs inversus" where her stomach and spleen are located on the right when it should be on the left and her liver is located on the left when it should be on the right. I also had to get an amniocentesis to check for any thing else that might be wrong. I had never heard of this condition and I'm so scared for my lil girl that I haven't even had the chance to meet yet. someone please tell me that they have heard of this and that my baby girl is going to be ok, or please take just a minute to pray that she will be ok and be able to live a normal life after she is born!

  • I'm sorry no advise or help but I'm sorry to hear this and will keep you in my thoughts and prayers as well as your little one! Did they say this would cause problems or anything at all?
  • Prayers for you and your lo! I've never heard of this but y'all will definitely be in my prayers

  • I've worked with kids before whose entire anatomy is flipped. Sometimes they need corrective surgery depending on how everything is functioning, and sometimes they're totally fine, just backwards. The amnio will give you some info to help you prepare, but I think you'll know most after she's born and can have a CT scan and possibly an MRI so the docs know the full extent of what they're dealing with. The thing to ask your doc is if they see any reason why she won't be able to eat normally. Having organs in the wrong spot isn't the worst thing...if they are whole and functioning how they're supposed to. Hopefully that's the case with your little girl. :) Prayers and fingers crossed. Ask a ton of questions when you see the doc next. :)
  • I don't have any experience, but @rtmommy seems spot on!
  • http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Situs_inversus check this out it seems it may not even be too much of a prob, I am at work so couldn't really read thru the whole thing but there is a basketball player who has it and obviously he is ok to play professional b-ball. I would say just research online and also ask about a specialist. It seems most common in what is called mirrored twins. I guess there could be some complications depending if she would ever need surgery but also to me seems like she may lead a normal life. Sorry thats the best I can do:(
  • thank you everyone I really appreciate it. I will update when I get results back from amnio
  • Praying for you!
  • I dont have any experience with this, but im guessing she will be okay. It seems to me that the fact that she has all the correct organs (just on the opposite side) is much better than what they originally thought (that she didnt have one at all). Did the dr not explain anything to you, as far as what this would mean or how it would affect your baby? Good luck & prayers hun
  • @davidnaadynsmama no the dr didn't tell me much at all said they might no more after results from amniocentesis. and I didn't really no what to say I was upset and left without asking many questions now I feel stupid for not asking anything at the time now I'm filled with questions
  • I understand hun. Don't feel bad. Im sure you were overwhelmed & probably couldnt think clearly enough to ask questions. You should write your questions down as you think of them. That way, next time you speak to the dr. you will have them in front of you in case you get upset again & forget what you want to ask. I really hope everything goes well for you hun. Im sure its scary, but im sure there are things that can be done to fix the problem. Who knows, they may not have to do anything at all! Stay positive hun. Sending prayers your way!
  • I will, and thank you
  • Prayers for your baby girl
  • I want to hear how this goes, I have never heard of it either. READ READ READ then write down your questions, @DavidnAadynsMama is right on there. I get anxiety and can't think or talk then later I remember stuff I wanted to ask.
  • I will update as soon as I no more, thanks for all your support ladies I really appreciate it!
