Failure to Thrive (Interesting news)

edited April 2012 in Babies Health
IM GONNA B!TCH HERE!!

My sons doctor is pretty much 'threatening' us with that classification.

Ok so I am 4'8" and didnt hit over 110 till I had kids.. I am SMALL!! My daughter is almost 6 and about 35-40lbs and 3'6".. AGAIN Very small.... My son weighed in at 14lb 14oz and 25.72in long at his 6 month appt... Small...

This damn doc is saying he's close to 'falling off the chart' and is a concern about failure to thrive.. EVEN though she didnt look at family history or any of his milestones which hes hit everything right on time...

They keep telling me (from the day we left the hospital) suppliment, suppliment, suppliment but he eats an estimated 25oz or more breastmilk a day!! (5-6 feedings a day) and does yogurt and stage 2 foods. I dont want to do formula. (Nothing against it just prefer bm since I am able to bf)

He gained 2lbs in 2 months... He is a hyper healthy little boy who is lean!! He even has pudge in some places but hes not a rolley-polley and I dont think I should have to force food down his throat to make him bigger... He is on his 'curve' its just in the lower %....

I am so sick of being stressed over this, sick of feeling like Im screwing something up, that my milks not good enough, sick of counting every ounce...

They can just kiss my behind!! I am done with thier stupidity!!!!!!

  • Yoü go girl! I hate drs that are so smug and full of themselves! If your boy is happy and healthy then yoü carry on being a great mom! :)
  • I would tell them to shove that chart up their ass!
  • Oh, tell him to go screw himself :)

My daughter is almost four and is 23 lbs. She's not even on the charts and every doctor I've brought her to is totally fine with it. She eats, has had tests run. They say she may have some form of growth retardation, but she's healthy as can be!
  • Seems like doctors nowadays are becoming very anti-breastfeeding and think that it cannot possibly provide enough nutrition for a child...
  • @captivated They now want monthly weigh-in's. Its military care so I have this scary fear they are going to 'call someone' on us because of it and then we have to deal with crap... It just bugs me. I send some extra oz's to daycare and he wont drink it and they have to toss it.. so bm down the drain... and Im pumping 10-12 and now sending 15... and it all adds up...
  • Thanks all... I just need to write it... my hubby understands and is supportive of my choices but I dont know if he really 'gets' it.. He will defend any and all that I want though...

  • My lo at her 6 month checkup (she actually went last week so almost 7 months old) she was 14.4 and 26 inches she's in the 10th percentile and Dr thinks she's fine! he said as long as she's gaining weight. which she is. she was less than 12lb at her 4m check.
Not every baby has to be chunky!
  • I am the same way 4'11" and didnt hit 100 till freshman year of college. My daughter is tiny too. Dont let them tell you how to raise YOUR child
  • My son is 15.3 and 26in and my dr said he's just going to be small and they are just going to keep an eye on it but as long as he's progressing he's fine! He also just advised me not to try to wean night time feedings since he is small and needs all his calories, which is fine.
I loved the way the dr discussed his weight w us! So don't be worried one bit..u doing everything just right!
  • First of all your doctor is full of shit..."failure to thrive" is a term used in nicu's to describe (usually premature newborns) infants who are abandoned by the parents and do not gain wait or grow from birth because of lack of love and parental attention... your child obviously does not have this problem because he is 6 months old now and doing well! And good for you for continuing to breastfeed, no matter what anyone says, it IS the best thing for your baby!! <3 btw:switch your damn pediatrician!
  • My son is 4 and he weighs about 26 lbs. I when im not pregnat weigh about 95 lbs. He is about the less than 3rd % and the other day told me he could be malnurished. This pisses me off! He is completly healthy and he eats all the time. I've been hearing this for 4 years now and I just shake my head and turn the other cheak... I know my son is just fine...and just like mommy! :)
  • "FTT is best defined as inadequate physical growth diagnosed by observation of growth over time using a standard growth chart. The National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) recently released improved growth charts that can be found at www.cdc.gov. While definitions of FTT have varied, most practitioners diagnose FTT when a child's weight for age falls below the fifth percentile of the standard NCHS growth chart or if it crosses two major percentile lines.3 Recent research has validated that the weight-for-age approach is the simplest and most reasonable marker for FTT.4 Other growth parameters that can assist in making the diagnosis of FTT are weight for height and height for age. FTT is diagnosed if a child falls below the 10th percentile for either of these measurements."

  • My son was classified as FTT at age 9 months because he fell below 5% and wouldn't come up. He's been at, or below, 10% since then. He is now going on 6 years of age, and weighs 35 pounds on a good day. I am 5 foot and didn't weigh more than 115 pounds until after high school and his father is 5'2" and weighs 120 pounds sopping wet. My son is extremely hyper and active, and he eats like a maniac, but what he does eat a lot of is healthy things, mainly veggies.

All in all, his doc isn't worried because she can clearly see his father and I aren't large individuals, so obviously my son isn't going to be big, either. Your doc needs to get a freaking clue! I hate it when people let their degrees or power go to their head... >:/
  • He's gaining not losing! Keep up what your doping obviously you all are tiny lol!
Also wanted to add y'alls kids are so tiny! In a cute way! I have a beast lol he will be five next week and is 53 lbs! And super tall! Can't remember specific but definitely not short and chunky..he's tall n lean. .
  • Fuck them. Lol sorry for the language but I've been going through it also. My girl is 10.5 months and 18lbs. But she's almost walking, constantly moving, but eats just fine. Shes just smaller. I'm so sick of drs freaking moms out, myself included, about babies being too tiny. Keep doing what you're doing. Trust your mommy instinct.
  • I don't have this problem (my daughter is huge lol), but just food for thought, I was a formula fed baby and I only weighed 17 lbs at a year old. I was always small as a kid and as an adult I'm only 5'1". So its not a matter of formula or bm, its just genes. Tell that Dr to shove it up his ass!!! Drs get paid big bucks to push stuff like formula and unecessary medicine.
  • Thanks all... unfortunitly I dont have much choice for a doc. We are military so we get what we get... its all one group of doctors... Im okand he is and thats what matters!
  • I've always been told as long and they gain or remain steady and don't lose they're fine. He is just following his growth curve and what matters most is that he has kept gaining steadily. Drs.seem so old fashioned and close minded at times. At least you know he is happy and healthy.
So what happens when they get labeled failure to thrive? I'm curious.
  • Dr are stupid they say my son is too fat after being a preemie please.I told them to suckkit

He is 33lbs and is 13months he is tall!

  • Tricare standard has some pretty hefty copays :( My surgery with standard is costing me 2000 out of pocket, my scripts vary, and office visits are 20% of the visit (usually about 60 bucks for me). I'm just too used to never paying for insurance, so that's crazy to me! Maybe because I require so many appointments and doctors...@gatorbob

  • Well we are going to work with them for now... my husband said we will tell them exactly how we (I) feel and if they start in on supplimenting or anything again we will deal with them then and there... We dont come close to qualifying for wic so thats not an option. I told my husband he needs to come to the appointments from now on because he out ranks the doctors and they dont give him the run around like I feel they give me. BAMCs the best out there and theres a doc in there somewhere we will like, finding him or her is the question.. lol...
  • Doctors at my hospital use that "failure to thrive" diagnosis all the time. It can be for a child or for an 85 year old. It doesn't always hold a lot of weight, just a diagnosis.
  • @Crisjoe Normally it wouldnt be to much of an issue but we are in a military hospital and they have to 'fix' everything... And my baby doesnt need 'fixing'... Here it does 'hold a lot if weight' becuase we can be refered to child nuritionists, psychologists and they will want to shove stuff down his throat and its all stuff that my son doesnt need to deal with...
  • So I took my lo to school today and his teacher was like... I know that they want you to give him extra bm but we are having to force him to drink the third bottle... So... Im not sending the third bottle anymore. Im just gonna add an oz to each of the other 2 and work on more one on one time at home..

I formula feed. It was my choice because im constantly on narcotics for my spine. But a dr shouldnt be so anti bf. Theres no reason you HAVE to have a chunky baby. As long as the baby is growing, I dont see an issue
  • Don't make your doctor feel that way! My 6 1/2 month old isn't even 14 lbs yet and her ped isn't worried about her! As long as he is making all of his milestones I wouldn't worry!
  • Like the other ladies said if he's gaining...he's fine. Smaller people generally produce smaller kids. Who cares if he doesn't meet their "curve" it's a generalized curve, not individualized. Pshhh kudos to you for not giving any formula. I bf for 5 months before I had to stop due to meds I was taking.
