Breastfeeding Military Moms Outrage

At a time when breastfeeding in public is already controversial, pictures of two military moms doing so while wearing their uniforms is sparking outrage.

The photo is part of a local breastfeeding awareness campaign by Mom2Mom of Fairchild Air Force Base, a support group launched in January by Crystal Scott, a military spouse and mother of three. Among the intimate close-ups of smiling young mothers cuddling their adorable babies, the images of the two airmen stand out.

"People are comparing breastfeeding in uniform to urinating and defecating in uniform. They're comparing it to the woman who posed in "Playboy" in uniform [in 2007]" Scott told Yahoo! Shine in an interview. "We never expected it to be like this."

"I'm an X-ray tech and I breastfeed in my uniform all the time," Scott says. "Granted they're scrubs. But people do it all the time in their uniforms. If you have a hungry baby, why would you take the time to change completely?"

Terran Echegoyen-McCabe, a member of the Air National Guard who was photographed in uniform nursing her 10-month-old twin daughters, says that she's surprised by the reaction to the photos.

"I have breastfed in our lobby, in my car, in the park ... and I pump, usually in the locker room," she told the "Today" show, adding that she usually nurses her babies while on her lunch break during drill weekends. "I'm proud to be wearing a uniform while breast-feeding. I'm proud of the photo and I hope it encourages other women to know they can breastfeed whether they're active duty, guard or civilian."

All of the women in the photos volunteered to appear in the awareness campaign, and Echegoyen-McCabe is featured -- wearing civilian clothing -- in a few of the other candid shots. None of the photos are posed; the women are simply feeding their babies the way they usually do. But even though some of the other photographs are just as revealing, only the ones of Echegoyen-McCabe and her friend Christina Luna in uniform have been criticized.

"The Air Force has never endorsed these photos," the photographer, Brynja Sigurdardottir points out on her website, where she posted several other photos from the Mom2Mom campaign. "These women just happen to be in the Air Force, in their uniform, breastfeeding their babies."

When it comes to talking about breastfeeding in public, comparing it to other bodily functions -- and even sex -- is common, in spite of the fact that breastfeeding is legal and protected while defecating or having sex in public is not. But the fact that two of the moms are shown breastfeeding in public while wearing military uniforms makes the entire controversy more complicated. The Army, for example, didn't even come up with a combat uniform for women until 2010, so accepting the idea of a uniformed soldier breastfeeding a baby may be especially jarring. And the uniforms themselves come with their own sets of rules.

According to Military Spouse Central, public displays of affection -- even something as innocuous as holding hands -- are not allowed while wearing a military uniform. Also forbidden while in uniform: eating, drinking, or talking on a cell phone while walking, carrying an umbrella that's not black, and (in some cases) smoking or even chewing gum. While there is no policy that addresses breastfeeding in uniform, Air Force spokesperson Captain Rose Richeson told MSNBC: "Airmen should be mindful of their dress and appearance and present a professional image at all times while in uniform." Military moms who are still breastfeeding are encouraged to pump and bottle-feed their babies while they're in uniform.

Scott suggests that the issue might have less to do with the uniform and more to do with our own internal conflicts. "I think a lot of people think that you can't be a mom and be a soldier," she says. "This is not something that's out of norm for them. They breastfeed in uniform all the time -- it's just not something that's usually captured on film."

Good for them women =) they are serving our country they should be allowed to breastfeed in public in their uniforms ^:)^
  • If this happened to me when I was in the military, I'd have told them to kiss my ass and show me the regs stating it is not allowed.

Then they tried to say that members in uniform should "conduct a professional appearance" and cited how you cannot have PDA, holding hands, etc. So when I picked up my children in uniform from daycare, I shouldn't have hugged and kissed them? I shouldn't have been allowed to bottle feed my infant? Oh please. [-(

  • this is so stupid
"its the same as urinating or deficating in public" who the f makes this shit up people are fing ignorant nowadays
  • i have parents feeding there children in my class at daycare all the time.. even my 14 year old sister said thats stupid
  • @homebirthadvocate, right?! Woot!

@isaiascruzjuly11, someone on facebook said that this shouldn't be allowed because "who will find these women intimidating. It's a disgrace to the military". :O So drunken sailors with permanent marker all over their faces in uniform, doing stupid dances drunk in the middle of the street and DUI's are MUCH more professional and intimidating! LOL

@moodymommie, that made no sense to me at all! It's not even on the same level.
  • @moodymommie, that's awesome! Go 14 year old sister! I hope our next generation can be taught to be more accepting.
  • Its disgusting that this is even a debate. Women should be able to BF whenever and wherever THEY feel comfortable doing it and be able to wear whatever they damn please!

  • Its so dang sad that this nation has turned into a bunch of raging ignorant idiots with mental boners. Seriously, boobs were made to feed babies, not as sex toys! They've been turned into sex toys, but long before they were looked at in a sexual manner, it was the only way to feed an infant. Ignorance really pisses me off. How do you equate feeding your child in a uniform to poppin a squat?!?! This pisses me off.
  • OMG... The USA wants you to fight to save the Nation but you can't save your own kid in the process.

    Wow!
  • Right. There is much more disgraceful things being done in uniform then breastfeeding. If that were me I would raise hell. I can fight for my country but can't feed my hungry child. Um sorry kiss my ass. In a huge supporter of the military but this is taking it to far
  • The people who are criticizing the photo are the disgusting ones! I think the photo is beautiful! When will these assholes wake up and realize a women has breast to breastfeed, period! :-@
  • this is the military part of me--While I do agree if you have a hungry baby then feed him/her. There's nothing wrong with breastfeeding your child. But because they are in uniform they are representing the Air Force and the UCMJ and pretty much have to adhere to the rules and regulations of the uniform.

The civillian part of me- its sad that its true...you cant be a mother and a soilder it seems while in the military. This is sad that people are making it bigger than what it should be. I work with women that breastfeed their children in uniform..in private of course or pump in their offices or lockerrooms. Its because its such a male dominated atmosphere its such a big deal I think...and that it makes people uncomfortable. :(
  • Breastfeeding is natural :-/ I dont get what the big deal is its not like bf moms shout hey look at me I am exposed! Feeding a aby is natural and have been done ever since babies were born and if mom couldnt breast feed they would hire a wet nurse to bf for them . I think this picture is wonderful and loving not crude or sextual
  • I guess I will be the buzz kill... please dont bash me... I am former military. I breastfeed. I full support breastfeeding. I have no issue with the airman on the right who has a bit of modesty and actually looks normal BUT I do believe that if bfing is going to reveal that much breast then cover it up. (Airmen on left) Not the baby but the exposed portion. I have big breasts and I am able to expose my nipple to my son without flashing everyone. I read one comment that said they thought there were 4 heads for a minute because shes shoving her kids heads into her chest making them 'poofy' (for lack of a better word) and those babies look like they are hanging there (They may be sitting; hard to tell) I think its also the atmosphere of where they took the picture also. I know plenty of women who bf'd in uniform and in public but wasnt a big deal to our unit or command. But tactfully and tastefully should be consitered.

So I cant say Im sorry I feel this way but I do and again please dont bash me for my honest opinion.
  • If you read the whole article not the copy and cropped one on here, it states that they are only in "trouble" because the posted this without the af knowing. They do it all the time (bf) in uniform and dont get in trouble.
  • As an AF wife who supports bfing, I think it is great these women choose to bf, even in uniform. If people want to get their feathers ruffled over the UCMJ, that doesn't spell out anything about nursing an infant, how about we ask where their hats are because they are clearly outside.

I agree with @lilbit01_209 yes they are uniform but I think because the woman on the left is showing "too much boob " should it be an issue? No it shouldnt all women got them. but its makes people uncomfortable truthfully. Even if its a natural thing people do. A lot of people don't see it like that.

And yes It doesn't say anything about breastfeeding in the UCMJ directly..but in the AF eyes this is bringing "discredit upon the air force" by showing this in uniform. Had they not been in uniform I don't think we ever would have saw or heard about this. But the fact that they are is getting people all huffy about it. But they shouldn't have compared his story to the playboy photo shoot with the SSgt back in 2007.
  • @misskristin Lol.. I didnt even notice the lack of headgear... Oops!! :-D

  • So a mom breastfeeding isn't allowed to have her cleavage showing, but a women can show that much (if not more) in a low cute shirt or dress?!
I don't see the problem with her exposure here. She's not showing any nip whatsoever, it's fine!
