benedryl...to give or not to give

edited June 2012 in Babies Health
My daughter has eczema and the Dr prescribed benedryl becuz she was scratching her head in her sleep. This was at her 6 month appt. We used it for about 5 weeks. Her head was scratch free and she was sleeping through the nite. I stopped using it and she was doing good for about two months. But a couple weeks ago she started waking every nite, tossing & turning. It takes hours to get her backto sleep. On Friday I noticed that she was scratching so I gave her benedryl that nite and she slept through the nite. She doesn't seem to be scratching today but i'm so tempted to give it to her so she can get her full nites rest. She's tired cuz she hasn't slept much since Friday nite. What should I do?

Hmm have you tried claritin or another kind of that sort, that is non drowsy. Or what about just coconut oil applied to her scalp? 5 weeks is a long time to be given Benadryl, you don't want her to become dependent on that to sleep...but I think you already know that, hence this post ;)
  • I have the same issue. My daughter has severe Eczema and I do have to give benadryl to her for her itching but I hate giving it to her too often. As I type she is up scratching away and I gave in and gave her a dose. I feel your pain it is exhausting to deal with. We go to an allergist in 2 weeks to see it her eczema is food related.
