Help...she's been eating like a newborn n has lost weight.

edited September 2012 in Babies Health
Since my lo was sick she's only been drinking 2 to 3 ounces every 2 to 3 hours. She doesn't eat that much but I try to feed her baby food at least twice a day. She's not sick anymore but still won't eat much. Idk what to do. The doc wants me to bring her back in a month to see if she's put on weight. She's 9.5 months n weighs 16lbs 8oz. She's in the 10th percentile for her age group. Any suggestions on getting her to gain weight or eat more?

    Anyone?
  • Try putting baby rice or oatmeal in her milk
  • I use to put baby food and rice or oatmeal in the milk
  • I use to put baby food and rice or oatmeal in the milk
  • I use to put baby food and rice or oatmeal in the milk
  • And I'm assuming you don't pump either??? That's all I got those are the only things I know they suggest and also since she is 9.5 you can feed her table food too by mashing it up

I feed her table food n I pump while I'm at work. She gets cereal fed on a spoon but not in her bottle. Thanks for the suggestions tho. Idk what I'm going to do. Hopefully her appetite will increase. @ebbry89
  • Any suggestions @mijita? U usually have great suggestions, lol.
  • Our pediatrician told us to put margarin or vegetable oil in her food, lol! We never did. She was just under 17 lbs at 9 months (18%) so not quite as small as yours. Have you tried table food? My baby just wasn't a big eater, I remember the doc said that most babies that age would eat like 2-4 jars of stage 2 baby food a day. Ellie would eat maybe 1-1 1/2 (and 16-24 oz goal range of formula he said). We just kept offering her foods, at least 3 times a day and she began eating more and more. She loves table food though! Maybe try that if you haven't already, table foods? We just figured the only thing we could do is offer and if she's not hungry then oh well, we know she's healthy. Good luck!
  • Oh we posted at the same time! I see you do give her table food. Hmmm. Don't know what else to say then, lol!
  • I'm not sure my daughter is almost 10 months old and has recently started only drinking 3 or 4 oz sometimes less but she does eat a little of everything I eat she just isn't interested in her bottles anymore. Maybe try to give her more real food or baby food throughout the day? I'm sorry I'm not much help.
  • @baileygoose ur lo sounds like my lo, lol. She's never been a big eater. She's always been in the 25th percentile until now. I do give her table food (grits, mashed potatoes, veggies...ect) I try to offer baby food at least twice a day, sometimes 3 but she doesn't eat a whole gar either. She's healthy too but it kinda worries me that she's losing weight.
  • @lilliansmom how much does ur lo weigh? N thanks that's what I'll start doing, giving her more table food. Is there anything u don't give ur lo?
  • When my daughter went for her 9 month check up she was 16 lbs and 14 oz and her doctor didn't say she had gain weight.
  • That's about how big my daughter was at 9 months. She just has a really hard time gaining weight. She is only 23lbs at 15 months. Just keep offering food/bottles/breast and when she wants it she will take it. Maybe try a sippy cup and see if she has more interest in that?
  • At her 8 month appt she was 18lbs I don't know how much she weighs right now but she has thinned out but also looks longer, she has her appt in 2 weeks ill find out...she really eats everything I eat plus her baby food and snacks throughout the day. I will not give her spicy food though...I just give her small pieces of things shes never had to make sure she can handle chewing it with her 2 little teeth and then she usually starts yelling at me for more Haha
  • @morgdeebee she likes her sippy cup but she only likes water. If I give her juice she'll only drink a lil n I can forget about putting milk in it, lol.

@jazzie the problem is that she lost weight. She lost almost 2 lbs. Do u know what percentile ur lo is in?
  • Ok a few questions... You EBF when she is eating is she distracted a lot? When Ollie was bf it got to a point where I would have to feed him alone in a. Quiet room, otherwise he would get distracted and only eat a few ounces.

As for the table food try feeding your LO foot fats like avacado. I would just either spoon feed Ollie them or cut them in slices and let him go to town.

I wouldnt worry to much. Ollie has always been little, and a small eater. As Long as she seems satisfied I would t force her food.
  • @lilliansmom lol what kind of snacks do u give her...baby snacks?
  • Have you tried putting milk in it? My daughter will only drink juice/ water out of one kind and her milk out of another.

But like ashley_smashley said if she seems satisfied I wouldn't force things on her.

Was she by any chance weighed on a different scale this time vs her last doctors appointment? The reason I ask is because at one of Julianas appointment they said she was 24lbs and at another one they said she was 20lbs. There is no way she lost 4lbs in like a 2-3 week span. So I chalked it up to different scales different result.
  • @ashley_smashley yes she gets distracted all the time. If I'm at work n my mom is giving her a bottle (bumped breast milk) n a commercial she likes comes on she will stop watch it n sometimes will not go back to finish.

N k I'll try that. Do u have other food suggestions as well?

I try not to force her bc I don't want her to associate food with something negative (if that makes sense). But I'll try not to worry.
  • Oh I see and no her doctor never tells us, I'll ask when she go for year old check up which is next month
  • No I haven't tried pumping milk directly into the sippy cup. N it was the same scale @morgdeebee
  • Haha yes she loves her puffs and mum mums I also give her pieces of fruit to snack on too..and Lily will only drink water in sippy cup too no juice and definitely no milk I thought she was weird that she didn't like juice but I guess its a good thing she likes her water more
  • Try to feed her what we call power foods because they pack a punch with calories, fat (mostly good fats), and protein. You don't need to eat a lot of it either, and in your case this is good.

Power foods she may eat include, avocado, banana, boiled eggs, cheese, greek yogurt, cottage cheese and oat meal.

If she continues to be picky and you know she'll eat a certain snack (i.e. veggie and/or fruit smoothies) then give her those frequently. Some nutrition is better than none and it'll provide her necessary calories until she gets her appetite back.
  • @lilliansmom lo everyone's always shocked at how much she likes water.

Have any of u ladies had to give ur lo iron? They told me her iron was low as well. @everyone I was told to give her poly Di sol with iron in it n when I take her back for her weight check they'll test her iron again.
  • They are more active at that age, my lo is 9.5 months. They burn more energy from moving about. My lo weighs 18.5 lbs and last weeks appt the doc said she was at 35% but they slow down during this month. I also bf and pump. However, my mom watches her a few days and she eats table food all the time, but breastmilk/formula is better if you're trying to gain weight...as per MD.

Only thing I can say is dont give water, may just fill the baby up and try to wake her up and feed at night twice too.
  • @mijita thanks love n I didn't know she could have cheese n eggs. I haven't tired that bc I thought she was too young but I have given her the Gerber yogurt. It's not Greek but will that work too or is the Greek better?
