  • Well if ur not very far along I say get one. If u train it right and exercise it it will be fine around the baby... hyper dogs can be bad cuz they jump around a lot so think about a mellow breed like golden retriever or an older dog from the pound

I wouldn't get one, bc once you have this baby the dog is gonna be another child. not gonna want to take a newborn out in the rain bc a dog wants a walk.
  • How far along are you?? Cause puppies aren't the best around baby's.. too hyper. But if you're not that far along it might be okay to get one and make sure you have it trained before the baby gets here.. but me personally I'm waiting until the baby is at least one maybe two due to the fact if I got a puppy now I really wouldn't fool w it when the baby got here. But if you do get a dog don't get a hyper one such as Chihuahuas,or those little black and white boxers. Bigger one are okay.. but from experience of having 5littlw boxers and a Chihuahua ... not good for baby!! Too honory.

  • I'm the same way, I can't live anywhere without a dog. I grew up with golden retrievers and they always made me feel safer, especially when my man isn't around. I agree with mommy2audrey that if you aren't very far along and you have the time to train it right before the baby comes then it would be all right. You just don't want to try and train a puppy with a newborn.
  • Yah I want an old dog ill have enough with a baby to train a puppy I only have 5 days till I meet my little one I just want to havr my baby protected but im so nervouse this being my first baby
  • @newmommy_navywife yah that is truly a good point didnt think of that
  • I definitely suggest getting a dog from.the pound... some dogs have been abandoned and are already triained I suggest beagles! So.sweet!
  • I got a chihuaha (sp) when i was 4 months for the same reason. Don't really recomend the breed if u have or will have kids. He is 9 now and we have 3 boys and 1 on the way. He is nervous all the time. We also have a great dane who is awesome with my kids!!! He is the biggest baby. Anyways we have had a dog or dogs everytime we brought a baby home and they were great. My hubby always took a blanket home with the babys scent in it before we came home so the dogs were used to it. My kids love our dogs and im glad we have them!!! Just start training immediately and u will be fine :)
  • What about a security system? That way you dont have to do any additional work. Plus some ppl could be afraid of dogs and ppl coming to visit your baby could become a task.
  • I should also say that if u live in an apt u may want to wait. We have a huge fenced in yard so i never had to worry about walking them to go bathroom. Loading a infant up every 2 hours for potty breaks cud really be a pain!!!
  • Guess what, there are many studies that have found that kids who live with dogs from birth to at least age 2 are less likely to develop allergies. Try petfinder.org to find rescues in your area. Make sure you get a dog they have a lot of history on. One that is trained and is already good with kids. Believe me, there are so many out there. I would recommend a dog of at least 3 years. Young dogs are great but I wouldn't want one with the hyperness of a puppy around a baby. Meet the dog in person to check the temperament and energy level. Good luck!
  • Yah Ive always had boxers and pitbulls I want a pit but older pit bulls from experience are moody and get annoyed and In an appartment a goldon or a shepered which is wat I wanted are to big.. Newmommy_navywife had a really good point... I mean it doesnt rain to much in california but u have those cold windy days im just nervouse ive had someone brake in my house and kill my mom so I get nervouse that someone is after me and will harm me and leave the baby alone but I dont want my paranoia to harm the babie just becuase I dont feel safe
  • @bex Thanks that was another worry I didnt want to harm his natruel ammunities but yah I want a rescue they seem alot more protective with families and very true they usually are
  • I just got one. Do a lot of research of breeds. I got an olde english bulldogge and she is amazing. I got her while my youngest was 4 months, and im preg again. She is 6 months old and so great with my kids. Very calm and quiet! Just do your research and if you get one id get a puppy. And make sure you socialize it with other small kids and dogs!
  • well trained its a touchy subject thats why I need opinions I dont want to make to many mistakesbeing a first time mom and hurt his little lungs or cuase him harm by bringing in a dog
  • I was never an animal person, but dogs are a lot of work. You have a baby coming, you don't wanna worry about taking care of both when you're exhausted. Plus the barking and wanting to lick the baby and stuff. Ugh. Plus if you get a puppy, he wouldn't understand that that's a baby and wants to rough house. My 4yr old wanted a puppy, we're getting a swing set instead. Haha.
  • I would get an older one. No puppy! I got a puppy around my daughters age and I was a mom to both
  • @newmommy_navywife a security system didnt work in my old house I dont put trust in those things it doesnt match when something has love for you and will risk anything for you it would be easy without a dog but I wud feel safer tricky tricky
  • No I dont want puppies theyre really annoying but an older dog would be just right my boxer when I was growing up was amazing he would always cling to me and make sure I was ok never left my doorway at night thats wat I want but I feel I wont get that lucky with my son
  • Understandable. Well good luck on the dog hunt! :)

  • thank you @newmommy_navywife I will def take wat u said into consideration thats why I ask for opinions cuz each one counts thank you
  • Yah boxers are very hyper and strong I wont get one of those but maybe a mutt or whatever little beemy eyes catch mine and if I introduce the baby to the dog and see how it reacts if not then ill give up its just my husband will have a training in september and will be gone for a good two months or three so all that time ill be alone at home with baby and I have no friends or family around
  • you're welcome!
  • I bought my boys a dog when they were about one. I wanted the temperment of a golden, but I didn't want the size because I was living in an apartment, and the boys just looked so small next to a full size golden. So I looked on petfinder.org and found the perfect dog. He's a golden retriever cocker spaniel mix and he's amazing. He's full grown now and he doesn't even come up to my knee. He hardly ever barks unless he hears something outside, and the boys crawled all over him and he just let them. G'luck on your hunt!
  • Thank you @kriss82001 goldens are great I had some growing up aswell ive always had dogs good dogs but babies and animals its always tricky but petfinder im gonna look now see what I find
