placental encapsulation

edited March 2011 in Health
Anybody have this done? If so how much did you pay for it? I have heard there are tremendous benefits for people experiencing ppd and exhaustion after giving birth and I am very interested, I just don't know if I will be up for doing it myself since I will be a busy brand new mom. Just don't wanna pay out the a** for it.

  • Nobody has done this? I am just curious what most people do with the placenta after birth center/home birth. I know in hospitals they usually just discard it (or sell to cosmetic companies) but I don't feel right about just throwing it out... it sustained my babys life for 9 months! Anyone feel the same way?
  • What do u plan on doing with of afterwards? I know in some cultures they cook and eat it on babies 1st b day. And can't u just freeze it in a zip lock bag? Idk if there r any special things u need to do with it or what ur plans r with it. Personally I'm donating mine to research.
  • I had considered donating it but didn't do enough research on it early enough to go that route. They told me I would have needed to get bllood tests done at 34 weeks and been approved and it is too late now I'm at 39 weeks. Next baby! But I was thinking of doing the capsules because apparently it is incredibly good for ppd and immunities. Not sure how much I would wanna pay for it though. I know you can do it yourself but it is kind of an involved process and I dunno if I will feel up to it right after delivery.
  • How does it help with ppd and immunities tho cuz its no longer attached to u or the baby. I'm guessing it wouldn't be too expensive but id do some research online for ur area so u know how much it will be. And if u do it urself that may help with ppd to a degree knowing u did the process urself. R u planning on planting it? And check ur hospital that u will deliver at cuz some of them consider it a "medical waste product" and won't let u take it home unless they process it cuz its a bio hazard.
  • I am delivering at a birth center, and it is a pill that you take made from the placenta. That is how it helps you. It is rich in many hormones and can help you transition from your pregnancy without the huge drop in hormones which cause ppd. It is just like any supplement you take while pregnant but it is natural, from your body so it can't interfere with breastfeeding

I have not personally done it, but I have heard about it in the past. I do know, depending on where you give birth, it can be a real hassle getting the placenta home given the policies and procedures to which hospitals and medical facilities must adhere. It is suggested to work out a plan with your physician or midwife before labor which clearly states your intentions of taking it home. It can cost anywhere between $100 and upwards, depending on who does it for you. Some may not even charge you for it, with cost of materials being only the capsules themselves.

When I researched it, the question of cost had been discussed here (http://community.babycenter.com/post/a21610707/cost_of_placenta_encapsulation), and a walk through on how to do it yourself was located here [warning: graphic images for those who do not handle blood well] (http://www.cafemom.com/journals/read/1577334/Placenta_Encapsulation_Instructions_w_Pictures).
  • I did a little reading online cause I was curious when u mentioned it. There have been no studies done to prove any effects of consuming the placenta. Is it safe?
  • Cool thanks for the info :-)
  • @Char It appears from what I have researched that as long as you follow strict sanitary and food handling guidelines and procedures, it is safe. Certain states require the person who does the encapsulation to maintain a food handler's permit, as well as follow OSHA and EPA set standards.
  • I talked to my midwife about this. She told me there is no proven research that says it is perticularly good for you. She said it isn't bad just nothing to prove that its some great thing. But she said there are companies that will make it into pills. It shouldn't be more then $50. She said a lot of cultures eat it and its not bad for you. But either way if you're interested I would look for a company online that you can send it to. Good luck. If you're still on here after birth I am interested to know how taking it makes you feel or if it help!
