  • No I don't think so. I use a midwife and she does as few as possible because she said there are no studies giving a difinitive answer either way. So....I would say it depends on how you feel about all of it and if your dr ia scheduling them then they can't be to worried about it.
  • Lol how would it be bad?? I would due to be in your position now, I dont get my first till I'm 11 weeks and thats on tuesday! Oh man you're a lucky duck
  • You are so lucky!! I don't no anyone else who gets to have their baby monitored as much as you! Jealous! LOL. don't worry.. you and baby are safe. :0) I had several ultrasounds my first pregnancy and we were just fine.
  • I'm sure since you weren't that far along they did an ultrasound since they probably couldn't get the heart beat yet. They did my first ultrasound at 9 weeks and the next one the following week since they couldn't get the heart beat on the monitor.
  • I'm 16 weeks today and I couldn't tell you how many I've had! My doc does one at every appointment until after your 20 week appointment. Enjoy it! Not everyone gets to watch their baby grow at this point, we are lucky! I don't see how it could be harmful.
  • I'm 9 months and have had about 12. I love it. I even had one that lasted almost an hour long. I saw all 4 chambers of his heart both hemispheres if his brain. I even got to count his fingers and toes already. And found out he has hair. :)

  • @HomeBirthAdvocate how can u say theres really nooo reason for an ultrasound? of course we all hope & assume our pregnancy is fine & dandy, but there are so many different things an ultrasound can detect before birth. From heart rate to malformations u can't detect otherwise.

  • @HomeBirthAdvocate I agree with you. Women have been having babies since the beginings of humans without any meds or ultrasounds! I feel lots of people don't realize your body will let you know if something is wrong. And although ultasounds can be a great thing (I have had 2 and hopefully wont be having any more) they aren't a necessary part of being pregnant.
  • And From family experience when even though the first SEVERAL ultrasound didn't show a problem it wasn't until about 7 mo that she knew although the baby had a heart rate & grew normal, only one side of the brain developed. Needless to fast they knew ahead if time he wouldn't live for more than several hours after birth. couldn't detect that w/out ult sound
  • There is no radiation emitted from ultrasounds it uses sound waves if radiation was emitted from them then of course they would be harmful.
  • ive heard of far more cases of detecting something unknown w/an ultrasound than I've ever heard of w/an ultrasound doing damage. It's modern med, it's dev for a reason
  • @homebirthadvocate...everyone is entitled to their opinion....but you really should not make a statement as a fact that you aren't absolutely positive about

The comment I am referring to is obviously your comment about 3d/4d causing more radiation to the fetus and mother......this is a grossly ill informed statement!!
Ultrasound uses no kind of radiation whatsoever!! I am registered in radiologic technology as well as in diagnostic medical sonography SO if there were any PROVEN dangers I would know and furthermore the highly educated physicians I work for would not do repeat scans AND offer the widely popular 4d scans!!

Everyone please take everything you read on here with a grain of salt!! Alot of it isn't true and I think as pregnant women we have enough to worry about without worrying about the things we were misinformed about!!
  • @kaycientn I don't think homebirthadvocate stated it as a fact. She is entitled to her opinion as you are. She probably has a vast array of knowledge that is different than what you know so there is no reason to insult her

To answer the original.question I don't think ultrasounds are bad. Many women have multiple ultrasounds (including myself) and their babies appear to be unharmed but I agree with homebirthadvocate wondering why the doc has you coming every two weeks and why an ultrasound both times. It is a little unusual unless they were trying to see how far along you are and then doing a first trimester ultrasound. They are more expensive than just an office visit and im pretty sure they would have to give a reason to insurance for doing so many this early.

I hope you got great pictures of your peanut though ;)
  • I have had 5 and I'm only 14 weeks the doctor I'd not just gonna do them with out reason but they are not harmful to you or baby
  • I've had 4 one at 6w, 9w, 11w and at 19w I'm getting another one at 22w i love being able to see my baby and I'm not high risk or anything baby is healthy i say enjoy it
  • @blissmarie23 I did not say anything to insult her....i clearly wrote everyone is entitled to their own opinion but some of these girls could have read the statement about radiation and ultrasounds and freaked out if they didn't know any better...with all the publicity on radiation in the news the last thing a pregnant woman needs to be thinking is she has exposed herself and unborn baby to radiation during her multiple ultrasound scans!
I'm not here for drama of any kind.....i was simply stating a fact that hopefully will make some girls on here not worry about negative effects of ultrasound.....
  • @KaycieNTN thank you for the information I went to the doctor today and she went through my upcoming schedule with me. I am going to have a lot of u/s coming up and reading this was making nervous.

  • Utltrasounds absolutely do not 100% give off any radiation what so ever it uses sound that bounces off echos to produce a picture of your baby higher resolution scan use higher frequencies of sound waves no radiation what so ever!!!
  • @kayceNTN thank u for the info :) i love to go get us done im 13wk5d and have already had 4 us..2 of them 4d. I love seeing that my baby is ok and i am going to be going every two weeks just to see how he/she is doing. everyone is entitled to their own opinion but i do appreciate ur info :)

  • No I don't think it is! I had my first one at 12 weeks, then at 18 weeks and getting another one at 22 weeks for 3D pics! So excited...:) u should b fine :) greatest luck to you and ur baby!
  • Your welcome ladies!!! Happy pregnancies to us all;) lots of luck and well wishes!!
  • @ISLAND_MOMMIE2B you are welcome!! I was so glad to read that I was able to make a few of you breathe easier....that's all I was trying to do...i was a lil worried everyone was going to take my post wrong!! I want no drama lol!! But trust me...my lil boy and this baby have been scanned weekly.....if u/s was going to do something negative we would know about by now....it had been used routinely got the past 20ish years!!!
  • @KaycieNTN thanks your comments, if you didnt post on here i would have believed to think that u/s scans were somewhat dangerous which made me worry abit. So thanks for taking that worry away :)
  • @JosieMarieMummyToBe you are very welcome!! I'm glad I was able to help you!! To each their own...but I personally couldn't live without ultrasounds!! I feel better being able to check on him or her and make sure their lil heart is beating away!
