anyone high risk due to past epilepsy and/ or celiac disease?

edited March 2011 in High risk pregnancy
I just need some like minded ladies for comfort. Or similar situations. I'm 9 weeks today and I'm always nauseous unless I'm munching on something and it has to b wheat free its just so frustrating. And I was just told I'm high risk last wednsday bc I found an ob that actually gave a shit (finally, thank goodness) and she was asking all the same questions the last one did but was confused as to why my last ob seemed to dismiss my history of seizures even though I haven't had one in almost 9 yrs she said they could come back bc of the pregnancy. So now I'm trying to keep my stress level down even more bc I'm scared I'm likely to have seizure. Ugh.

  • Aww thank u ladies.
@tiff87124, amazingly enough I am able to keep the prenatals down so that I have been doin right at least :) did u eat wheat at all during either pregnancy? If u don't mind me asking. I just stopped a couple weeks ago. I was horrible at keeping the diet. I had been wheat free for almost a year in November and then my gma died and right after a lot of bad things started happening in my life so I started eating wheat again bc I just didnt care anymore. But when I found out I was pregnant I stopped. It's even harder now bc of all the cravings of not just pregnancy but wheat withdraw .... its driving me nuts!! I'm doing well though as long as i keep munching all day the heartburn and indigestion stays away. Which is also from both the recovery and pregnancy. I hate it when ppl tell me Ohhhhh honey just eat crackers when u wake up for the nausea and in thinking ummmm yea that wouldn't help a Damn thing. Ughhhhh its so frustrating!

@emilyhershberger your name sounds so familiar how old r u? And how long have u been epileptic? I had two partial and one grand mail when I was 12 - 14 yrs old but none since then and I'm 21 now but the obgyn is still worried....
  • I grew up with peti mal epilepsy...so yeah I am high risk. I am on child #3 and haven't had a seizure since I was 17
  • @tiff87124 Oh good that makes me feel better. So its safe to say there's room for error. Like u said sauces and whatnot. Ive been too scared to give into cravings bc its gonna hurt that much more to eat it and I'm do happy I'm eating right bc I'm sure is be even more miserable if I wasn't. Lol. Thank u so much for sharing!
  • I havent had a seizure in 8 years& my dr doesnt consider me hugh risk but I do have a nuerologist just in case because like u said being pregnant can bring them back but I really hope it doesnt because I do NOT want to take those meds while pregnant....they can cause birth defects
  • You can eat gluten free, and have it taste good. Www.eatingglutenfree.com is a really good resource. I personally do not have celiac, but the majority of my family does including my four year old, and I have a strong feeling that my current pregnancy does as well. Tonight was my last gluten night till I am done nursing her. My son who does have celiac was getting the gluten through my brest milk, and it caused him to stop growing, and not gail any weight. I really really suggest that you don't cheat on the diet. Recent studies have come out stating if you have celiac and cheat on the diet, it isn't a matter of if you will get cancer but when. My sister runs the website above and if you email she will write back and answer any questions you have. Also, if you have any questions I am always willing to find the answer if I don't know what it is. Good luck!
  • @mammagz thank you so much! I've found a couple sites over the years that have helped like of course the celiac foundation site and www.glutenfreefaces.com but almost everyone on there that has the medical degree to give advixe or the knowledge is never available and I've been told to make appts with specialists but I didn't qualify for Medicaid till 5 weeks into my pregnancy. Also about your children- my mom had celiac when she was pregnant with me back in 89 before she was diagnosed (in 97) and also passed it on to me. I had intrauterine growth retardation bc of the wheat she ate and continued to have stunted growth the rest of my life. 2 years growth delayed to be exact. My pediatrician was so confused and worried I wasn't getting enough nutriton or something bad was going on at home and I had behavioral problems my entire childhood was put on meds for add and tourettes and pediasure for nutrition but none of it worked and then I developed epilepsy. Sooo I really don't want my kids going through all that bloodwork and hospitals and doctors their entire life. I'm doing everything I can to avoid wheat and I'm not even going to feed my baby anything with wheat until he/she gets a blood test confirming there are no antigens in their blood. Thank u again for your help and I'm going on that website after my breakfast of wheat free pancakes and hash :) we can soooooo eat yummy breakfasts if we get creative.

@cherise21588 yea I'm worried about that too. I used to b on 800 mg of tegretol twice a day so I really don't want to go back on those pills.

@tiff87124 I've been nervous about gatorade bc its considered an energy drink but I guess for us its essential? I'll go buy some today :) it'll be better than chugging water that's for sure. It makes me so nauseous.
  • @kdaniels. Hunny I have epiliepsy, and its been about 2 years and yes high risk. But I talked to my neurologist and they said they are under control and should have no issues with going normal. Was the greatest thing to hear. And I totally need to switch doctors. They are shit. I'm 9 weeks today too this is awesome someone the exact same. Yay!
  • Ckasprz1183@yahoo.com if you wanna chat.
  • @ckazfirst awww! I for a a preggo buddy! Haha yayyy :) I don't use yahoo or fb anymore though.... we can keep in touch on here :) and that's very comforting to hear about not worrying about the seizures. Thank youuuuu!

@tiff87124 I just read the ingredients on powerade bc my fiance had some in the cupboard and apparently every flavor except Orange has modified food starch! Be careful! (That is if u try powerade over gatorade at any point) lol ill b shopping for gatorade soon though trusttttt me.
  • llol *i finally have a preggo buddy
  • I have epilepsy...seizure free for about 6 years....all the ones I had were grand mal....had my first one while pregnant with my first child....dr knows of my past history but had said nothing....I'm just trying not to stress....to eat right...to rest....and even stay away from flashing lights....(no dancing this past weekend at my friends bday party thanks to the strobe lights) I was med free and seizure free while pregnant with my second child so I'm praying for that this time....
  • Oh...I'm 9weeks 3d
  • @kdaniels its so stressful on the body that the added stress of not sleeping enough is horrible. And the emotions I'm so not affraid to admit ...I'm a total bitch. Not in denial trying hard to not take it out on my fiance. He doesn't deserve it. I'm 9 weeks today and the last 2 days no sickness, so I'm super stoked. And preggo buds sound awesome considering we are in the same boat
