Does anyone else feel this way?

Ok I feel a bit silly about this, but it bothers me that my bf was not raised to say "aunt and uncle" before their name. When I was little I was told to do so as a sign of respect. Does anyone else feel this way? Or should I really just pay no mind to our child saying it.

  • I agree with you. It's important that children address their elders with respect. Also, I think it reflects negatively on the parents when their children call adults by their first names.

  • Wow I never thought of aunt and uncle as a sign of respect I alway looked at it as a way of idenifying family! My nephew calls me auntie and I think my feelings would be hurt is he called me by my first name. Not out of disrespect but I love him and want a close relationship with him and I thin auntie shows closeness.
  • Haha that's good to know, I thought I was the only one! I feel like not doing so, your children lose a sense of authority with those people.

I didnt it think was out of respect either ...to me that was there name..but when a child says your first name knowing to say mom or dad...that's being derespectful..
Like my son learn when he was born that was his Anutie...or tia..now that hes older he kbows there name..but only sees them as Anutie or tia..he thinks its silly calling them by there real name

I was told to call my aunts and uncle and family members as.... Uncle/Auntie (so and so) Grandpa/Grandma/Grammie (so and so) to not mix them up.

    Example: Auntie Niecey, Uncle Pap.
  • I believe its a respect thing as well. My son will call his family members aunt, uncle, grandma, grandpa ect...
  • @beatrice1436 good point about calling your parents by their first name.
When I was in the 4th grade my teacher asked what my mom's name was. I was really confused and told her mom. When I went home I asked my mom and she told mebut asked me why. I told her my teacher asked and I told her mom. She just laughed and laughed. It was embaressing lol
