Curious??

edited April 2011 in First time moms
So this is my first pregnancy and I'm 12 weeks 4 days. Yesterday I finally had my 2nd appt. I was kind of disappointed because I was hoping for another ultrasound =\ bt was only able to hear the babies heartbeat which I was still happy with because I was nervous something was wrong.

So I was just curious how often do you ladies usually get to see your baby by the ultrasound?
Also can you request to have an ultrasound or is that only left up to the doc. Or nurse practitioner?

  • I only get two unless there's a problem. However, I'm in Canada.
  • I only had two, doc said they don't so more unless you go outside the docs office to do it or you have a high risk pregnancy.

  • I had one at 11 weeks. One at 22 weeks for gender and anatomy. And one at 26 weeks to confirm due date. And I won't get any more
  • I only get two. My first will be at 20 weeks. I only have to wait 3 more weeks to finally see my baby!!

I believe most insurance companies only cover 2. But if you need more because you are high risk or to date your pregnancy, then the doc can bill for more.

  • O ok thks lol
I had my first @ 9 weeks to confirm tht I was pregnant and to measure the baby for the due date. My nxt will b at 15 weeks I guess for the integrated screening...bt thks for all the answers =)
  • @lmelanson My fiance thinks it's because we're using midwives instead of a "real doctor" and he's petty frustrated. I'm getting anxious, but I'm a fairly patient person in general. I feel like pregnancy has brought on an extra sense of serenity in some departments. Just not at work!
  • Im not to aure but I think its if your insurance covers it and they will do more only if theres something wrong witb you or the baby . but I could be wrong . thats just what my midwife told me .
  • I think mine covers more than 2...Thts kinda disappointing to only see ur baby twice..
have any of u went outside of your doctor and had a ultrasound?? If so where did u go..n how much wad it?
  • Someone, I think @kerideern, said her friend got a cheap or free ultrasound at the local community college by a student.
  • @kenziesmom216 and Jwigs what made you decide to go with midwives??
  • I kinda had no choice its the only thing my insurance would cover . but I dont mind it . there very good .
  • my friend said I can go in to her school thy do free ultrasounds but they hold me I have to be 16 weeks I think...or Mayb 20 I dnt remember lol
  • My doctor does 2 one for due date and one for your anatomy but I had 3 because I had to have my cervical length checked cause of a cone tipsy I had done when I was in the final stages of having cervical cancer
  • @kenziesmom216 what's the difference between the midwife and the doctor?? Do they do things differently?
  • when I was pregnant with my son I had an ob and now I have a midwifw I havent noticed anything different . they do everything the same . so im not quite sure what the difference is .

@bee_2545 I didn't want a doctor that would just be out to make a dollar as quick as he could, which was the mental image I had of an OB. I don't want a c-section, and midwives have significantly lower statistics for c-sections. My brother and I were delivered by midwives and my mom had great experiences both times. My friend used the local midwife office where I live and said they were awesome, that she really loved them. So... I decided I would give them a try. And so far, they are really awesome.

A midwife just focuses on women's health and birthing babies. They can prescribe medicine and all that jazz. But they don't do surgery. So if something goes wrong, they pass you on to an on-call OB.

If you have Netflix, you can stream the movie, The Business of Being Born. I watched it after scheduling my first appointment and it only reinforced my commitment to the midwives and encouraged me to have a natural birth.
  • Ooo tht makes sense...thanks for clearing that up..
