low iron levels

edited February 2011 in Third Trimester
I just got back from my ob, I am 35 weeks and have extremely low iron levels. My dr is sending me to a blood specialist to be checked out. I am not sure what they r looking for or why my levels are so low. Anyone else dealing with this?

  • Yes I am anemic because of gastric bypass 6 years ago...my ferritin is an 8...what was yours? I will have to get infused towards the end of my first trimester. Keep in touch and let me know what happens.
  • I am at 8 with 4 weeks left...but for no reason I know of.
  • It can be fairly common with pregnancy. That's why they take your blood so often during pregnancy is to check it. I found out mine was low with my first at 24 weeks, so my doctor put ne on iron supplements and checked my blood everytime I went to the doctor to make sure they were staying up. You may need a transfusuin before and after deliver as well as iron supplements.
  • I do take supplements and it is severly low that is why I am seeing a blood specialist. This is my 6 th pregnancy and I am always a little anemic but not like thus time. Just wondering what they r looking for.
  • Just to let you know, if your stomach can't handle the iron pills (they made me really nauseous and made the pregnancy constipation worse) you can ask your doctor about getting it in an IV infussion. That's what I had done with my son and everything turned out ok. Just thought you might like to know that you have this option.
