I now eat 6 meals a day which a lot more for me, but you have to keep your sugar balanced. If diet alone doesn't work they will put you on a pill to help lower it.
I don't think the risk of c section is much higher, but I do know you could have a bigger baby. I am going every week now for an ultrasound to make sure everything is functioning correctly. When I went for my 32 week one they said she weighed 4' 13" which is a little big. I should get another weight either this week or the next! I worried a lot, but its really not that bad!
Hope that helps, and if you need to talk I'm always here!
I have GD and it really isn't that bad. Of course, every doctor is different, but from what I understand, not many pregnant women are placed on insulin unless their blood sugars are uncontrollable even with diet moderation and pills.
I am currently taking a medication called Glyburide once a day, in conjunction with a "diet" if you want to call it that. I'm still welcome to eat the things I love, I just can't indulge like I used to. Basically, I eat a LOT of protein, lots of veggies and limit myself to carbs, and of course sweets. For me, the sweets don't seem to bother my blood sugar as much as the carbs do, so I eat whole wheat pastas and grains and breads in lieu of the regular stuff. For instance, I'll make spaghetti, but I use whole grain noodles. Or, if I want a sandwich or something to that effect, I substitute whole wheat tortillas for bread. If I am absolutely craving bread, I have switched to whole grain. I eat brown rice instead of white rice, and I've been trying to eat sugar free sweets and things of that nature.
The worst part about being a temporary diabetic is having to monitor my blood sugars. Not because it hurts (because really, it's not painful at all), but because you have to do it after every meal and first thing in the morning before you eat. It just gets a little hectic because sometimes you forget and you get all frazzled lol.
I think your risk of c-section does go up, but that's only because if the sugars aren't controlled, the baby can get VERY big. I am only 35 weeks pregnant, but my baby is close to 6 pounds already. However, I think so long as you keep your sugars well under control, you'll be just fine. Our bodies were made to have babies, so I wouldn't worry if I were you.
Let me know if you have any other questions. I'm certainly no medical professional and I only know what I know based off experience, but I was freaked out not knowing what to expect with the diabetes and expected the worst, but it's really not as bad as you think.
Good luck!
