This is going to vary for everyone. My daughter suffers from failure to thrive and is going to be age 4 next month and still fits a size 4 diaper. 2T pull-ups are even big.
My oldest daughter was born into size 1 diapers, even as a 35 week preemie.
My son spent about 3 weeks in newborn size, 3 months in size 1, then about 3 months in size 2. He then spent about 9 months in size 3 before hitting size 4, then potty training.
Just go with the majority of checklists found at baby registries and online. IF you receive newborn and size 1 packages for a shower, and you end up not using them, most stores will allow you to just exchange for the next size.
Get mostly size 1's and then just wait, depending on babies size will depend how fast you size up, most stores will let you exchange unopened packages for next size...
My first was in newborn for a couple of days then size 1 for a couple of weeks then size 2 for a month to two months. She gained weight very fast. I have a few packages of newborn and 1s but will exchange
