My baby is huge...What am I gonna do?

edited April 2011 in Pregnant
I'm 39 weeks and just had an ultrasound. They estimate my baby is already 8lbs 7oz but my cervix isn't dialating so my doctor won't induce until next Wednesday. I'm almost fully effaced but my cervix just isn't ready for labor. I'm freaking out . . . My baby is going to be enormous!!! Its head is also measuring big but its legs were small so now all I can picture is a top heavy baby that can't sit up or walk on its own because it keeps tipping over. I know that sounds horrible but I can't help it, everything I have worried about this whole pregnancy is coming true.

  • Is ur doctor going to try a vaginal birth? If its so thats fine .i have a friend who deliver a 9lb baby boy n she was great
  • Honestly Don't freak, I've heard of bigger w/vag births w/no prob (including both my sisters). ;)
  • My baby was 9 lbs, I was #8 on a 105 lb frame. Ull be fine I promise!
  • Oh mama dont worry too much. Ultra sounds can b off by a whole pound i hear. My kids were huge at birth with big round heads.... they still have big heads. U will b ok. Good luck to u. Hang in there. :)
  • By the way... i totally recomend an epidural w big headed babies. ;)
  • @vanessa_mom2b yes, vaginal is the plan and I want to go natural. I think that is what freaks me out the most, natural delivery of a 10lb (my estimate of what it will weigh in a week and a half) baby with a big head probably won't be very easy!

  • Thanks for trying to make me feel better guys! I'm still freaking out but glad to know I'm not the only one that has gone thru this. My family always has small babies so I'm blaming this all on my husband and his big headed family, I told him I'm using a surrogate father for our next baby. ;-)

Ultrasounds aren't usually correct when predicting size. They can be off by over a pound. I had my daughter naturally and she was 9 lb 9 oz and honestly it was a great easy labor. It seemed like her weight made gravity work for us ;) I didn't tear or get any drugs. I would try not to be nervous about it. And if you want to get your cervix ready you can insert evening primrose oil capsules near the cervix. Or have sex with your man and let him finish inside of you. It will help soften things up and get you ready
  • Bluegrass_mommy where do you live? I'm in Lexington
  • @blissmarie23 I'm actually in Virginia . . . Bluegrass is a nickname I got after I got married. My last name is Pendergrass and apparently the guys I used to work with noticed that I wore a lot of blue, they gave me the nickname 8 years ago and it kind of stuck.
  • My sister says that her baby that weighed 10lbs was easyer than her 7 pounder. The extra weight helped him slip right out rather than ur uterus having to contract even smaller to get the baby out ;)
  • Just be Blessed you have a healthy bby.... Some mommies here are going thru hard times! Congrarulations!
  • @betty I am very blessed. I know all too well about hard times. I have had several miscarriages and was told I would never be able to carry a baby past about the 6-8 week mark. I had 2 sinus surgeries in july and the doctors think one of the meds I was on helped me get/stay pregnant. This is my miracle baby and I know how lucky I am. I was looked down on by my in-laws because my husband is the only boy left to carry on the family name, one of his aunts even tried to get my husband to divorce me. I have had a terrible pregnancy so I am just worried about complications during labor/delivery. Sorry, didn't mean to sound ungrateful, I thank God everyday for my blessing!
  • My third baby was 9'1" and had a 15 inch head. Now I'm pregnant with #6 and they are predicting 11-12 lbs!
  • I have big headed children. My oldest was 7.4 and she was 3 weeks early. My second wad 8.11 and was full term. this one I'm not scared, but I know what's coming now. Plus I had to have a csection with my kids, cause my daughter was breech. But hun, as long as the baby and you are ok and healthy don't be scared. Just do whatever needs to be done to have you both safe.
