platelets?

edited May 2011 in Pregnant
At the 28 week tests...when they do a cbc and the glucose test..they told me my blood platelet count was low...what does that mean? And the number keeps dropping...the last time they checked it was in the 120s...does anyone know what it means?

  • it could mean you may bleed more during birth. Are your gums bleeding more too? I don't think it harms the baby tho. Did they tell u to change your diet? Rifined sugars, white bread, pasta ect can cause low platelets.
  • You may want to look up Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura. My husband had this a few years ago and had to have treatment to get his platelets back up.
  • Yeah I believe your blood is thinner my moms opposite her platelets are too high and she gets blood clots
  • @jamie77 no they didn't tell me to change my diet or anything and my gums arnt bleeding more but I have noticed that now when I get my blood drawn or have to have an IV that I shoot blood...I leak everywhere...

@carrielee the doctor said I had gestational t-something lol I can't pronounce it let alone spell it!

@mommabee13 I guess that would be right that my blood is thinner since it doesn't seem like I clot anymore...I'm not normally a bleeder and with this baby everytime I bleed it takes forever to stop...

I really hope this doesn't hurt the baby or anything and I hope I don't bleed more when I have him...I'm already high risk due to a lot of things one being I almost went into shock after baby #2 :(
  • Is it Gestational Thrombocytopenia?
  • @carrielee yeah that's the one!
  • I've also had this with this pregnancy they just took weekly blood test ... for about 6 weeks an it last appointment midwife said it was stable
  • Would they need to give you blood during or after birth? That seems scarey if they cant stop you from bleeding..
