do you ladies prefer the naval ob or a civilian ob?

edited May 2011 in Military moms
Last Wednesday I went to my 2nd ob appointment with the naval ob on base, this is where tricare placed me for prenatal care. But I am HIGHLY debatable of this clinic.

At my 1st appointment the dr I seen labeled me high risk, because I have a son who was born with a defect, & I've delivered preterm with my last. However, they told me to come back for my next appointment in 6weeks.

So last week I go to my 2nd appointment. I told the dr I had some spotting & she just said it's because the cervix is so sensitive without any doubt in her voice. I told her my back has been bothering me a ton & she didn't even touch that subject. Finally I reviewed with her everything I've been through in past pregnancies & asked her why I'm only in every 6weeks when every other clinic does every 4weeks from the start, & she told me it's because they feel that no matter how much they see me that won't change the outcome of my pregnancy... really? Because I'm pretty sure if they found an infection, they could treat it & prevent me from spreading it to my baby or prevent it from causing preterm labor... which reminds me, they don't even ask for a routine urine sample! Do I really have to tell my ob to do a urinalysis because I had reoccurent utis in my pregnancies. Utis are common with any woman who's pregnant, this seems pretty necessary without question in my opinion. I just don't know what to do, ugh...

OH, & BEFORE I FORGET! She actually asked me if I had an eating disorder because I'm 16weeks & haven't gained any weight yet... mind you, I haven't lost any either. A baby at this gestation weighs only a few ounces, it's really not necessary to come to such an assumption at this point.

  • That's strange....i absolutely adore my naval ob. But our base contracts a local civilian ob office to come see us.

I'm sorry you are receiving such stinky care.
  • @NewMommy_NavyWife, I really am not too fond of mine, obviously. :/ All of the staff at my clinic is military personnel, there's not one outside dr, except for the specialist I see for my ultrasounds, who by the way is only in once a month, & I'm only suppossed to see him next week & sometime around 32weeks. I really wouldn't mind military personnel, but they just don't seem to care. I'm going to suffer anxiety or something before this pregnancys over I swear... I need a little more reassurance. They call me high risk, but because I haven't suffered pre eclampsia or anything of that sort, they just don't want to see me more. They don't take into consideration that I've lost my first baby to sids, I had preterm contractions with my 2nd at 30weeks & he was born with a defect. My last pregnancy I had numerous cases of bleeding & I delivered at 36weeks, which isn't totally awful. But all together, from my first to my previous pregnancy I'm just so nervous of anything that can happen. :/
  • I say upgrade to tricare standard if you dont already have it and find a ob off base before you get father along.

You should have a very monitored pregnancy considering your history.
  • Ive had no problems at naval here. They have been extremely kind and helpful. I have a midwife, not a Dr right now. I won't meet the Dr til 36 weeks because I'm having a c section.

  • @almost4 yea I've loved it. My first appt they made it seem like I'd be there all day...I was there about 2-3 hours and that included waiting, ultrasound, labs, and meeting with Dr to give info. Last appt, the midwife did cultures then we went in his office and went over everything from weight gain to birth plan. I go back on the 26th for another appt. I've been seen every 4-5 weeks.
  • @NewMommy_NavyWife, I have tricare prime, do I need to switch to standard? I have searched for obs that accept tricare, I found one that I have numerous good reviews about, I just need a referral since I have tricare prime I believe. & thank you, I am glad to see that even a nonmedical professional understand where I'm coming from with all of this.

    @sands3, where are you stationed?

@Almost4, I am not even located on base, we live pretty close to base though. None of this makes any sense to me, I feel so neglected just because I haven't endured anything that put myself at risk. Is that how I go about finding a new dr, all I have to do is call tricare?
  • Stationed on New River Air Station, but go to naval on Lejeune
  • i mc back in oct-nov and i was treated like SCUM at an army hospital. im 13 weeks today and i refuse to go to a military clinic or hospital. i went trom tricare prime to normal tricare so i can c a civilian and the co cost is not hardly anything! just $25 when i register and $16 a day for baby and my hospital stay. i will not have my baby at Tripler! i hate how when its military they treat u like a number not a person. i want my pregnancy, labor and delivory to b special for my husband and i not a nasty experence. im all for civilian!
  • Im not sure but I always thought you can only receive off base care with tri. standard unless they sent you there.

But medical should have tricare section and I say just go and talk to them bc they can deff tell you and get you all the stuff you need.

    Good luck!
  • I've never been to the ob on base but I have a civilian ob I love him he is so nice and tries to answer every question. Also if I dont feel good or have any weird pains I can call at anytime and they get me in as quick as possible. You can change your ob if you dont like him. I have tricare also and they told me I can switch up to 15 times.
  • @sands3, oh really? I go to Naval at Lejeune as well for now. But they're treating me totally different than you, & I'm suppossed to be high risk!!! You go every 4-5weeks, I go every 6weeks because I see dr Zelig ( a specialist who is in once a month ), but I only see dr Zelig for my routine ultrasounds, so how is that keeping a good eye on me & my pregnancy? Also, I was only at my innitial appt for maybe 2hrs, that included a sono, & labwork, nothing else. Then at my next appt the following week the dr went over my history & lab results & sent me on my way... :/

@mandac10, I def feel like another number rather than a human being with obvious concern for her pregnancy & growing baby... do you HAVE to switch from Prime to Standard to see a civilian dr?
  • @NewMommy_NavyWife, I will have to give tricare a call & see about how to go about this. I really don't want to pay a copay if I don't have to, it is not my fault I am not receiving the care I should, I shouldn't have to pay for that.

@MissPrego, I've been to a regular ob with all of my previous pregnancies, because my husband wasn't in the military at those time periods but I never had a problem... now all the sudden I'm assigned a dr, & I'm not fond of them at all. I just really need to figure out how exactly I get out of this place!
  • @NewMommy_NavyWife, thank you again! I really hope I don't have much trouble trying to switch.
  • I dont think you will...if they are like the ppl here they work with you.
  • I've never had a civilian ob so I can't compare..but my ob this pregnancy is wayyyy better than my last.
  • I'm sorry you've had a bad experience! Maybe its just your dr? My midwife tells the receptionist when to schedule my appts and I just go. I pray I never have to meet Dr. Zelig!! I would definitely look into switching if I were having the problems you are!! When's your next appt?
  • @NewMommy_NavyWife, a smooth switch would be absolutely wonderful, fingers crossed!

@caitiecakes, I'm glad someones having good luck with their ob this time around.

@sands3, I have seen two different drs so far, I asked to be scheduled with the same dr everytime & they couldn't even do that for me... & since I go every 6weeks, I can't even have my appt scheduled right there & then, I have to call like 2weeks after my appts to even schedule my next appt! I'm just really iffy about all of this, I do not want to take risks with my pregnancy & baby... my next appt is an ultrasound on May 19th with dr Zelig, I haven't been able to schedule my next ob appt yet.
  • Oh wow. You really should look into switching! I'm not high risk at all and go more than you? That doesn't seem right! I'll have to write that drs name down to avoid in case(god forbid) anything happens. Good luck!!
  • @sands3, yeah... I really think I am going to. :/ I don't think it seems right either, it's very frustrating for me! & dr Zelig is not a naval hospital dr, he is a specialist that comes in once a month from Wilmington for all of the high risk women. I don't even see him as a dr, he just does my sonos, so I don't understand why the ob thinks I'm getting 'extra' care as it is. I don't even get extra sonos with him even though the main reason I am high risk is because my son was born with a defect... they make no sense! Good luck to you as well, hopefully you don't have any problems with them throughout your pregnancy.
  • @sands3, do they do routine urine samples for you? Just wondering... all of my previous pregnancies at my ob in NY they took a urine sample every appt to screen for utis & to check for protein levels & stuff... but like I mentioned above, I had to ASK my dr to do a urinalysis just to make sure I didn't have a uti...
  • @MommaTiffay- First you need to do you research and find a doctor you like. Tricare should of given you a list of OB in your area civilian and military. Google them and see their rating and comments from other people they should also have the doctors history and education. When you find the one you want tell your primary doctor that you want a referral to the ob you have chosen they will send out the referral and then you should get a confirmation letter in the mail within 2 weeks after you get it make an appt. with your new ob to meet him. =)
  • @MissPrego, I was never given anything like that... I had to go to my pcm & confirm pregnancy in order to get my original referral for an ob, & I was assigned to naval, no other options. But I have searched clinic here & found one that I have seen many good reviews about, & would like to attend. So I guess I'll go to my pcm again & ask them to send a referral for that clinic. But see, when I went to my pcm to verify pregnancy, I had the clinic I am looking into now in mind & they told me tricare chooses for me, wahhh. Things work so weird around here, I swear...
  • This will only be my 3rd appt coming up. First appt, they did urine with labs, my last appt they didn't. I don't know what they will do this time. My ob in Durham did urine every appt also...I thought it was routine, but we will see.
  • iI was never giving a list of obs in the area either, my pcm just referred me to naval.
  • Mommatiffay- Where do you live? And no tricare doesnt choose for you...
  • Sands- When you find out you're pregnant you had to call tricare and they send one out to you. Or you could go on their website and they should have a list there as well.
  • Oooh ok. Oh well...I'm happy with naval so far.
