Airport scanners... Are they safe? Flying tmr and worried?

edited May 2011 in Health
Are the new powerful full body scanner safe for pregnancy? Im worried that they may not be :-S Im flying tmr and usually have no problem going through them. But since being pregnant changes everything I need to make sure. I spoke with my drs office but they didnt really give me much to go on. One said that they would force u to go through them anyways :-(

  • They claim it is but I don't trust them, no one knows the long term affects plus they keep changing the amount of radiation it puts out. I'm flying next week and will ask to go through the regular mettal detector or be frisked then risk microwaving my baby
  • and you are still aloud to ask to be pat down instead of going through, just give yourself some extra time to get to your flight

  • I've flown a couple of times during this pregnancy, and the security officers have been very accommodating about giving the pat down instead of making me go through the scanners.
  • I don't think there is any problem just going thru the metal detector, but I would probably decline the full body scan. We have flown a few times since the body scanners were put in place and people are chosen at random to go thru the scanners so u may not even have to worry about them.

I agree with everyone......The metal detectors r ok but please opt out the body scan which is full of radiation. I chose the pat down method for either or. Ur exposed to enough on the plane as is...
  • *sit in the middle of The plane, unless there is assigned seating. Its the least bumpy. I sat in the back for 7 hrs to be closer to the potty, not worth my insides coming out. The last attendant (like a 1hr flight) told me that.
  • My doc gave me a note for flying! Try to get one so u don't have to go through the scans. She said its better to be safe then sorry. I was flying every month... they will pat u don't too....@somastar
  • I'm glad you asked this...I'll be flying alot during the summer.
  • As long as you don't stand in it and just walk throw should be fine I flew at 28 weeks and my baby is fine just try not to worry too much but to each there own
  • What u can do is tell the security guard ur concer
  • Oops sorry hit send on accident andways tell the guard ur concern and ask to get a pat down. They will have a female do it in that lil clear box. Not a big deal my dad has a pace maker and can't go through the scans so he has to when he flys
  • When my dad came back from Cuba for the military in January we were allowed to go to the gate to meet the troop. Well, that meant going thru security, scanners, etc. I informed them I was pregnant, high risk, have a filter that's titanium for blood clotting issues, so they used the wand & patted me down. No issues. You can also get a doctors note to solidify you're not advised to go thru the scanners (that's what my OB said he would do for me if I ever needed it, so has my regular doctor just because of that filter when I'm not pregnant). Hope this helps! Safe travels!
  • Thanks everyone! I think I will do the pay down instead of the scan. Ive been doing more reasearch and no one has a clear cut answer. I havent been felt up by anyone besides my husband in years so this should be intetesting lol! I wondering if putting a squeaky toy in my bra would get a laugh outta the tsa person... Probably not hehe :-p Im joking of course and many of my friends have never had a problem but their is always one jerk in the bunch that may take too many liberties. How much extra time do you guys think I should allow. I try to get there 2hrs before boarding. Im flying out of BWI and Ive never had a problem with the ppl there.
