d&c

edited May 2011 in Pregnant
I'm 12 wks. I went to the er Tues bcuz I was cramping & spotting. They did an us & they could not find the babies heartbeat. Well I went to the Dr today & he said I should have a d&c. So I have one scheduled for tomorrow afternoon. Has anyone had this done? What does it entail? What is recovery like? Or any other info I would b appreciated?

  • Aww, I'm so sorry to hear this:( I've had a D&C & it's not bad @ all. They basically just put you to sleep & "scrape" the lining & everything from your uterus. The recovery is not bad, just some mild cramping, bleeding & discomfort. Dr told me I would bleed for 2 weeks & I only did for 2 days. They tell you to take it easy for about a week, no heavy lifting or sex & it takes about 6 weeks for your period to get back on track. You are extremely fertile after the procedure & they say to wait @ least 2 cycles before trying again. That's just because the lining in your uterus needs to build up some before it's able to properly implant again...May be a bit too much info but I hope this helps you. I had no pain or problems with it @ all! Good luck hun & I am so sorry for your loss. I've been in your shoes twice:(

  • I haven't had one so I'm not much help but I am so very sad to see this post and am sorry. I pray that you do fine and that your body and heart heal quickly... I know God is watching over you and seemed to need another angel... prayers to u.
  • @CajunMom No definitely not to much info. I really know nothing about it. This is the second time I've lost a baby but the last time my sons twin bro was stillborn @ 25 wks.
  • I agree with mama... I would wait a couple Or a few days though, just in case.
  • @Mama_Kat he said bcuz it would b very painful to just pass the baby & I ruptured with my daughter so there r some risks to letting it happen naturally & they measured baby @ 10 wks & I know 100% I am 12 wks. So he doesn't know how long it has been. & my cervix is closed. So it doesn't seem like it is going to happen naturally. I'm still spotting though. & I saw her check the baby 3 or 4 different times & nothing but a straight line. Very hard to c for a second time.
  • & my b-day is sat.

  • Thank u all very much. I was numb for a while. I mean I cried when I found out & the whole hr trip back home on Tues. But I finally broke down again tonight & cried & cried & cried. I think it is finally feeling real to me. It was just like a bad nightmare. & everyone keeps asking if I'm going to get my tubes tied now. Bcuz this baby was not supposed to happen bcuz I ruptured. But I got so used to the idea of another baby that I just don't think I can. I wanted that baby so bad.
  • @theswift4: I had to have a DNC in October 2008 & I couldn't have said it any better than @CajunMom did, but I wanted to offer you my empathy & support. I bled after mine for about 5 days & was told to not have sex for a month, & to hold off on ttc for three period cycles. But different OB's are likely to advise slightly different. I was lucky, & my period got right back on track quickly. I waited until January & tried again, got pregnant in March, & then miscarried naturally at 5 weeks in April 2009. That had nothing to do with the DNC - I have loads of other health issues undiscovered at that time. But here I am, 8 months pregnant, & though my miscarriages were painful & life-altering, I learned a lot about who I am, my strengths, & my determination to be a mother someday! Good luck & my heart goes out to you.
