potty training a boy

edited May 2011 in Parenting
I will be potty training my son soon and I just wondered... do you start with him sitting for pee or standing? I can think of arguments for both, but was looking for some opinions. Thanks!

  • I dont have any boys of my own, but running a in home daycare i have potty trained many. I always have them sitting, but facing the back of the toilet. keeps the aiming to a minimum and the mess :) after they get the hang of it i just put a stool in front of the potty for them to stand on. (usually after a few months of making it to the potty and not making a big mess on the back of the toilet.
  • We tried our son sitting, but he peed across the bathroom... He seems to have a easier time standing... His daycare also has him stand, so I think he will learn better if its all the same. It jus depends on ur little guy and how he feels more comfortable. Austen likes bein jus like daddy! Lol
  • I recently taught my nephew standing but I guess he found it easier to sit. After a couple weeks he got th hang of it standin up but yu need to get a step stooll cuz they will pee all ovr th toilet if they dnt reach it :)
  • Thank God my nephew didnt pee all over th bathroom lol I taught him to hold down his little weewee when sittin :)
  • @surprisenumber3 I hadn't thought of that, sounds smart! Seems like it might make for an easy transition to standing since he's already facing the right direction!
  • I have a son and I taught him to stand, my toilet is low so he didnt need a step stool, I tried putting cheerios in the toilet for him to aim...but he didn't like them in there lol so I had to flush them and he just aimed in fine
  • @i_anaya @praying4our3rd @pregnantlettemama thanks for the advice! I had been thinking I might as well try to have him stand, since he'll be doing that eventually, might as well do it from the get-go! I guess I'll try it that way first and if he struggles or wants to sit, I'll let him sit! Thanks for the help ladies! :)
  • @summergirl22 that's funny that he didn't like the cheerios in there! I figured I'd have to give him something to aim at, but I guess we'll see! My son will definitely need a step stool, unless I want him to pee on the floor! ;)
  • @praying4our3rd it didn't even occur to me that he might pee through that gap! Would've sucked to learn that the hard way! although I'm sure I'll be cleaning up plenty of pee off the floor... ;)
  • I trained my sons sitting (all 5 of them) and naturally they all peed standing when they were able to stand over the toilet. Sitting while their young keeps the area clean and pee free lol.
  • I have two boys and I trained both of them by sitting backwards on the toliet to start then to standing. I found this less of a mess the don't pee every where and it gets them use to peeing in that direction.
  • @dawtalove Thanks, and wow, 5 sons!? That's awesome! Do you have any girls?
  • @mommy2now3 Thanks! I really do think that is a very smart idea!
  • @bensmama I'm expecting #6 due 11/17 and I'm hoping for a girl this time.
  • @bensmama yea he didnt like the cheerios but I know some lil boys who did and it can help them aim if they need the help! Also they sell these sticker things that u can place in the aim spot of the potty...good luck, potty training can be hard especially when ur trying to train a boy...cause its not like you can show him fitst hand, but daddy can, take advantage of that when u can...even if he just watches daddy, its a start!
  • @dawtalove I bet you are! Well good luck, I hope you get your girl! :)

@summergirl22 yeah, I'm constantly barging in on my husband, saying 'look Ben! See how daddy goes pee pee!' Ben says, 'daddy goes pee pee' and points. My husband hates it. Lol. Oh well! ;)
  • I taught my son to sit first...to teach him to push it down. Once he could hold it, I had him standing up pushing it down to the toilet. Now he doesn't need me in the room with him at all.
  • I did mines sitting. But get the potty cushion that has the boy pee guard so they don't pee all over the floor.
  • Im due oct for my 3 rd boy....fun way to teach a boy is to get a step stool and put some colorful fruit loops in the toilet and let him practice by using them as a target but just watch him close bc my youngest wanted to eat them lol but he will love going potty after beeing shown this mine both loved it! Target practice lol!!
  • hi pooty chair had a gard i taught himvsitting and after a couple weeks standing of course he much prefered standing
  • When I taught my boys I taught them sitting and always reminded them to make sure their pee pee was down and they close their legs so not to have pee all over. After they got the hang of that they started standing
  • Just curious on the ages of boys here...my son turned 2 in march and I've tried to start potty training him a couple times but he has NO interest at all. He will sometimes yell and run the other direction. I don't want to push him into it-I keep hearing "when he's ready". I now have 3 in diapers and am ready to cut that down to 2! Lol. Just curious on ur ages and how u knew it was "time". I've been told about a million times boys r harder than girls to potty train-great since my first 2 r boys!
  • You can do either... if he's sitting teach him to "tuck". If he's standing teach him to aim!! (Sink the Cheerios anyone?!?!) I think it really depends on the child to be honest. Either is fine! Just preference. If one doesn't work try the other. Many kids do start sitting but others are fine peeing Like daddy right away. Just make Sure to follow through with it BC if you're lazy about it, he will be too! ;)
  • @z_mommy_2009 my son will be 2 in June. My friend passed on a 3 day method that worked for her daughter at 22 months, so I'm giving that a try. I'm sure it will be a longer process than 3 days, but we're going cold-turkey! Should be interesting! ;)

Thanks everyone for the advice and support! I will be pulling up this thread periodically to refresh on the ideas when I'm getting frustrated. ;) I sure hope it goes well! :)
