edited May 2011 in Just for Fun
My dog is allergic to fleas, she got bit by one so I bathed her to kill any off and got some stuff at petsmart to put between her shoulders. She got covered in mud yesterday bc of the rain and I bathed her (regular pooch soap not flea killer) and noticed she has a bad skin irritation (guess she's allergic to that too) that every time the water hit her she would shake it off so I put cold on after to try and soothe it. I already set my appt for her Saturday but can I so anything to help? She's ripping her hair out bc the flea Freaking bit her and the sores on her back...I just don't want to make her suffer until sat.

  • Give her benadryl until u c ur vet itl help wth the discomfort. Kids liquid is the best option bc u can squirt it rite in her mouth
  • Poor baby. :( Generally, the most common fix for skin ailments is oatmeal. Oster makes an oatmeal doggie soap that seems to do pretty well on stopping itch and irritation, and makes the coat super soft too. It kind of sounds like your dog might have hotspots though, which can definitely be triggered by flea or tick bites, or allergic reactions. Most places that sell any decent coverage of pet products will carry a light medicine for hotspots, although if its really horrible or just plain stubborn, your vet will prescribe a topical cream.
  • Hydrocortozone cream and benadryl should help till you get her in
  • Give her so benadryl. You give 1 mg per pound. It should help till you get to the vet.
  • My dachshund has allergies to things. She gets big bumps all over. The vet had us give her benadryl once. I would call and ask them the doseage. Now she takes a perscribed allergy pill if she gets a reaction.
  • That's what fleas do. They r hard to get rid of
  • Baby shampoo will soothe skin and is safe for dogs. Peroxide n baking soda n dish soap is also a flea remover, and skunk smell remover also whitens coat lol.

My dog gets that every summer. In august. It wasn't to bad til '09. I tryed washing her & nothing. So we went to a vet & that's when we found out it was flea allergies!! They gave her a shot & the stuff on her back. Cured it right up. So last summer when I noticed it I knew wat to do. Before summer hits, start using that between the shoulder ointment. Use it every 4 weeks. Also even with the flea bath & ointment, the bites will still bother your dog. Even with my dogs special shot & ointment it took a few weeks for her to stop biting herself. So for now try to soothe your doggie. Vet gave me a conditioning spray. See if they have it at a store. Also NO flea bath or any bath for at least 2 weeks. It irratates the skin too. & try not to wash the dog for a few days after ointment is applied. Give it time to work. Just keep applying that ointment every month. She should be fine. Maybe you can distract doggie w a chew toy when she starts to bite. It takes time though. Speaking of....its ointment time for my doggie too.

  • Yeah I forgot to write baby oatmeal shampoo . It's mild and gentle
  • @one5one yeah this started with her a few years ago, she's 11 as of April. But I gave had to take her for steroids many times they had gotten where I could just call and refill the prescription. I tried frontline to keep fleas off which it didn't, she needs something to repell the fleas. She never gets infested but just one bite and she rips her hair out. The new flea stuff I tried is sensa somethibg but she's not taking to it...I called for her steroids Tuesday however and now they want to do blood work, I just don't want anything to be wrong...I've had her10 yrs she's my baby.
  • @catben she's 18-20 lbs. I just don't want to give her to much.
  • What a lot of people don't know is oatmeal in a lot of cases make dogs itch as well yes soothing but it leaves residue.....anyhow...fleas r horrible. I'm a dog groomer showed dogs for 17years so take my advice or not.....bennedryl as suggested above your vet should give her a cortizone shot... bathing wise don't. Do it a lot u will strip natural oils that protect her.use a citrus shampoo.....if u use drops don't use cheepo drops most dogs are allergic...bathe,wait 48hours to put drops on (advantage or frontline) y wait 48hours because it mixes with their oils in skin n it takes aprox 48hours...if u have to bathe. After wait 72hours because u will wash it off..your vet might do pregnizone as well its highly suggested. Bomb your. House fleas r horrible. Spray yard wash all bedding. Etc...zodiac spray works great!
  • Also garlic powder in food helps keep them away
  • Does anyone know how to do doses on benodryl & Thanks your everyone's responses.@lil_buggie_3 @septbabie @captainmorgaine @abeecat@@catben @beautiful_altar @bumpgirl @mommyof1soontobe2 @uncaffeinated_katie
  • Hey there. I was a Vet Tech before I moved last year and there are a lot of topical treatments for fleas that go between the shoulders. If you are using cheap store brands like Hartz your dog can have allergic reactions and that stuff doesn't even work well. Make sure you get Advantage or Frontline all the vets I've ever worked with highly recommend it. Also bathe the dog with johnsons and johnsons baby shampoo and only bathe the dog once a month. Dogs need the natural oils on their skin and if you bathe them too frequently it can irritate their skin....also its good you are taking your doggy to the vet just in case because maybe he has some other allergy and they can give him a shot or some antibiotics for you to give him at home. Hope that was some help.
  • Oh and never give your dog any human medicine unless instructed by your vet. Benadryl is fine as long as you call your vet ahead of time and find out the dosage. Its different depending on the size of the dog and most vets will tell you not to do it on your own but if you talk them your dog is very uncomfortable they might be nicer about it. Some Vets are very particular about certain things.
  • Give her childrens meds.... I always give them to my jack russel
  • Maybe now that's she's older she's more sensitive to the bites. Poor puppy!! Hope she feels better soon!

  • For your size dog if u have. Children's give her a full tablet every. 6hr...adult cut it in half she will b fine benedryl is very safe even if slightly overdosed...small 5lb dogs r ones u have to watch
  • They make pills now that prevents fleas and even the flea and tick collars you get from the vet are wonderful
  • Flea n tick collars irritate skin more and only keep the bugs from the neck area doesn't help w backend
  • @mscheyla do u think she could be allergic to the flea repellant?? My dog has allergies to frontkine n others
