morning sickness

edited January 2011 in Pregnancy symptoms
I was wondering if anyone had found some ways to help ease morning sickness. I'm 5 weeks pregnant (not my first) and am having horrible nausea. I have celiac disease which means I can't have ANYTHING with wheat or gluten in it. Any advice? Oh, and I mostly get my "morning sickness" at night.

  • I am totally with you- I'm almost 12 weeks with my 2nd & my husband has celiac... I have had all-day sickness since 5 weeks, and its just starting to get better. I have tons of tips for you- way too many to type- so you tell me what you're doing so far first, and I'll try to help out!
  • Oh my gosh, I am soooooo happy to find someone that knows what I'm going through! So far the only thing I've found that helps is rice crackers. Smells are one of the biggest causes of the nausea. I have a 4 month old son who is starting solids, and the smells of his foods are a big trigger.
  • First of all, I'm sorry it took me so long to get back to you; I wrote this huge list of ideas for you late last night & I guess it was too long so when I hit 'post' it just deleted everything I wrote & I was so frustrated & didn't feel well, so I went to bed...
  • Anyway- my first recommendation is to get ahead of it early & try to stay ahead of it throughout the day. Eat as soon as you are up in the morning & anytime during the night that you're up longer than a quick trip to the bathroom. Then (except at night) try to sit still as long as you can with a 4mo old, lol... 15 minutes is great if you can.
  • Then, make yourself eat something -anything you can get down- every HOUR all day long, and don't eat & drink at the same time. Try to wait 30 min in between eating & drinking. Don't bother with 'meals' until you feel better- just small portions all day long. Try to branch out & try anything even slightly appetising. For me I could eat something for a few days, then have to find something else.
  • Some GF things that have worked well for me are: Yoplait yogurt, Udi's GF bread & bagels, toasted with butter or cream cheese, if you can tolerate milk products-?... I don't know if you've heard of it, but if not I get it at Whole Foods & its fantastic.
  • Other good things for me were/are, Chex, fruit cups packed in water or pear juice (not as overly sweet as the syrupy ones), fresh fruit like apples cut super thin, nectarines when I can find them, and grapes eaten very slowly. You might also try Glutino pretzels or crackers & nibbling on cheese- again, if you can tolerate it.
  • Lastly, eat something with carbohydrates right before bed. I usually eat a small bowl of cereal or a handful of crackers. Rice cakes would be fine...That helped me a lot to fall asleep and wake feeling better. If it gets too bad, you can ask your doc for an anti-nausea medication. Mine gave me one even though I didn't want to take anything, but I have had to use it on occaision & it does help take the edge off.
  • I don't know how helpful your signifigant other is- my husband was terrible when our daughter was born & it turned out his irritability was 90% due to his Celiac that wasn't diagnosed yet... hopefully you have someone who can help out with your little one when you feel the worst. You might try having something on hand to smell when you're feeding your baby... even if its just a bag of rice cakes!
Just try not to get frustrated: most likely you will start feeling a little better each week & it will be mostly gone by your 2nd trimester. I hope something in all of this helps!!! Good luck!
  • You are more than welcome to look me up on facebook if you have it, or email... my name is Jayde Brumitt =)
  • Thanks for all the tips, and I'll definitely add you on facebook. I haven't announced the news yet (I'm only 5 wks) so you won't see anything about the baby yet. I have my first ultrasound tomorrow, hopefully we can see something!
  • I have used bitters in 7up to settle my stomach works really well for me!
  • I found that keeping a snack next to the bed and having something in my belly before I even stood up changed the pace of my entire day...eat before you get nautious.
  • I'm about 5 weeks and can't stand the smell of french fries or cooking meat.
  • Seven weeks with my first I haven't been able to keep anythin down but pickles crackers and gingerale smh
