do IVs hurt?

edited May 2011 in Giving birth
I know, of all the things with labor the iv is probably the least of anyone's worries but needles scare me more than giving birth. I plan on going all natural but I figure they will still at least do the iv. But does it hurt? Getting blood drawn doesn't bother me but a needle just hand freaks me out

  • I don't really think they hurt...maybe just a little sting, but that's it. You will do great!
  • If u get blood in it and they have to wash it out, thats the
    Worst part.. I hate it

  • @uncaffeinated_katie That's what I had planned but most now just put it in case of emergency and they need to hook you up they don't have to stick you plus to keep you hydrated. I think some woman need antibiotics some times too. What's heplock

  • No don't hurt
  • @praying4my3rd @mommyof3soon2b4 @karla_with_a_k that you all. It just makes me nervous, sorry my phone slightly mutilated this post I tried fixing it and it made it worse lol
  • @mscheyla honestly it depends on the nurse for the putting in and taking out part. Once it's in its not painful. After my second child it fell out and they were gonna put itback in so I didn't get dehydrated but I told them don't bother I'm perfectly capable of drinking water like a big girl ;)
  • Its just a poke like getting your blood drawn :) after delivery I had to have blood drawn every 2 hours in just one arm. For preeclampsia..It looked like I was shootinv drugs up from how many times I was poked and ive had many ivs in the past month. Youll be fine :)
  • Well pray you get someone who knows what there doing! I had this freakin lady poke me 5 times before they got an,older women to do it who got it the first time, but you know mean while I was having bad contractions and having this airhead poke me unsuccesfully! I could have screamed at her, but I held my composure lol, my advise if they dont get it after the first try request someone else up front!
  • @mrs_shu that is hillarious.
  • @summergirl22 that's what scares me my grandmother has had it where blood started pulling back through the iv then the other couldn't find the vein and had blood everywhere. I hope I don't have a newbie
  • @uncaffeinated_katie ah so that's what that is called lol
  • @mrs_shu I dont know about you, but when I was pushing, I had an iv and I was drinking cup after cup of water, I was so thursty! It was crazy! I think I drank more water giving birth than I did in my whole pregnancy! lol so sometimes its good to just have the iv, I couldnt imagine if I had no iv, I think how thirsty I was I woulda died lol
  • No, iv's dont hurt.
  • @mscheyla iv's are so good during labor and delivery, it may be a fear u have but u will over come it, try not to think about it and just know if u neef an iv its because its in ur n babies best interest, when the time comes I'm sure you'll feel differently, good luck!
  • I had an iv during labor because I was strep b pos and needed antibiotics.
  • Nope they don't hurt. It's uncomfortable while its in bt nothing painfully unbearable.

  • I feel the same way. Something about that needle that they slide right under ur skin makes me want to flip out.....actually had a mild panic attach when they put the iv in when I had my wisdom teeth cut out. U don't feel it once its in tho bc its flexible. Its still gross. And everyone has a hard time finding my veins so on average I get stuck 2 times. Once it took 4 tries. I have learned to mention this before they even try so they know to just start off with the little needle
  • i have one very good vein! and i always give them that arm but i had to give them my other arm one time and NEVER again! when they put the needle they hit a valve and that hurt soo bad. hopefully you have good veins cause thats the only thing that really hurts
  • I dont think they hurt.. But then I went to school for it and got poked by newbies five times a day! I looked like I shot up drugs.. Lol
  • if the person doing your iv isnt a moron (and some are unfortunately) it isnt really a problem, however some women are like oh im good then blow out your vein like they did the last time with me. Before you get your iv you should def ask for the best person on duty to do it, otherwise you may get stuck a couple times and be bruised after. Once the iv is in though you dont really feel any pain from it unless you catch it on something or if it has been too many days that it has been in there.. but seeing as how your giving birth you shouldnt have to worry about the length of time scenario
