Maybe a dumb question but what influences baby's size???

edited May 2011 in Pregnant
So yesterday I was watching A Baby Story and this woman had an 11 pounder and I started wondering do we have control over our babys size? Does it depend on how much we eat? I used to think so but I was also watching 16 And Pregnant where this teen was anorexic and was barely eating anything and she had a healthy 8 pounder. This girl I know who was overweight and used to stuff her mouth when pregnant had a tiny baby...

  • I think it has to do with genetics and gest diabetes. Me and my sister married men who were big babies, and were small framed, and we both had big babies. Baby is gonna take whhat it needs regaurdless......
  • I hope that my genetics takes over and not hubbys. I have a feeling I am gonna have a big girl though. I am diabetic to start with... Type 2. I haven't gained but maybe 5lbs and I am 20wks.. But hubby was 10lbs 4oz when he was born...i was 7lbs 8oz. I think I am screwed lol.
  • @mama_underpants @Stillsurprised So if you have diabetes its usually is a big baby?
  • It's mainly genetics; mostly the mother's... its fairly close to what you weighed when you were born. Nature designed it this way so if you're 4'9" and weighed 6lbs at birth, but your partner is 6'5" & weighed 10lbs, you're not going to have a 10lb baby. You most likely will have a baby between 6-7lbs.
There are obviously things that can alter this a little; poor diet, smoking, drugs, diabetes, etc. But for the most part, it will be close. I am 5'5" & weighed almost 9lbs at birth, and my first was 9lb 4oz. My best friend is 5'2" & weighed 6lbs at birth, and her first was 5lbs 11oz.
    Hope this helps! :)
  • Yes, diabetes usually triggers a larger than normal baby; when I had my daughter, they tested her blood 3x in 24hrs because of her size to make sure she didn't have it. Thankfully, I just had a big, healthy baby! =)
  • @vette_devil That explains alot, thanks! I was 7lbs and funny that that is what I'm hoping for! A 7-8 pounder :)
  • Oh no!!!! I was 9lbs 2oz! :(
  • Lol @excitedforoctober I'm gonna need prayers!
  • @NewMommy_NavyWife Yes you are! :p You should ask your hubby how big he was when he was born...
  • Im 5'1 and i weighed 6lb 2oz when born! My baby is estimated to be over 10lb! Im not diabetic and was told off for not eating enough by my midwife so what happened here!?!
  • Oh shit...this is pretty scary, im 5'11"-6' and I was 9lb 12oz...this is my first...i see myself as screwed when I go to give birth..im gonna try it natural too. O_O
  • My hubby was a preemie...lol maybe that will balance it out!
  • @denois Whoa big baby!!!! Over 10lbs? How far along r u?

@EricaK22 I will pray for you just like I'm praying for @NewMommy_NavyWife...lol
  • @newmommy_navywife If it's any comfort, I weighed 10 lb. 7 oz. when I was born, and my daughter Jada only weighed 7 lb. 6 oz. :) Try not to worry!
  • @newmommy_navywife see there is hope! :) ^^^^^^^
  • @ExcitedForOctober im 38+3 weeks was hopin to have this baby early but no signs yet! Booked in for june 8th to start things off if still no signs
  • @denois Aw I'm jealous, I wanna meet my little man so badly. Is this ur first?
  • @ExcitedForOctober yes this is my first! I cant wait now! Im sick of not being able to move or to sleep :-(
  • I started a post about that episode yesterday when I was watching it. I couldn't believe how the mom was stuffing her face with cake & junk especially after her dr told her the baby was already 10lbs!
  • @denois Ugh I'm so scared of that uncomfortable stage of pregnancy :(
  • @StarKrayzie Yep thats what made me start wondering. That baby looked like he was 4 months already!!
  • Its not a nice stage at all but will be so worth it in the end:-)
  • That baby looked like a grown man! With all the snacks she ate that baby's probably diabetic now. I understand giving into cravings but do it rationally. She looked like she was carrying twins & the fact that she was so big the measuring tape didn't fit around her stomach made me lol!
  • @denois Yes it is worth it! I'm just so scared that I'm gonna be the grumpiest preggo alive when I get huge and uncomfortable, I will have to come with a warning sign to hang around my neck!
  • I had a 9 lb 7 oz baby two weeks ago. I didn't have and diabetes and I gained only 35 lbs. Im pretty good in shape due to being active duty military so I ate fairly healthy. I was 7 lbs 13 oz and my husband was 8 lbs 12 oz...I guess I just make big babies..I wonder how big my other children will be??
  • @kayleigh27 Aw congrats if I hadn't said so before! :) Did you have a natural birth?
  • Thanks @excitedforoctober. Nope I had a c section. My dr said that I would wind up with one if they induced so they scheduled me a c section. Glad I agreed since they had trouble getting her out even with that lol
  • Im in trouble ...I was 9 lb 11 oz... hubby was 9 lb 13 oz... he's a pretty big guy...dr told me we are going to keep a close eye on baby toward the end. She wont let him get to 10 lbs! !!!! Wish me luck!
