fearful of dying in my sleep ...

edited May 2011 in Health
okay less then a month ago i woke up choking on what seemed to be acid reflux i could feel the burning in my esophagus. i jumped up and began to vomit, this scared the life out of me but i was able to breathe again. although it scared me it had never happened before so i thought it was a fluke. last night the same thing happened to me but i wasn't able to void (vomit) i was just choking and unable to breathe ... my husband sleeps with ear plugs so to say non the least he didn't hear a thing. then again last night it happened again, it went from never to once now to twice in one night? idk what the hell to think but it scared me. i'm doing the sleeping on my sides but in the middle of the night i guess i turn onto my back. now what??? i'm freaking out this never happened during my first pregnancy and i did experience acid reflux but not to this severity. SCARED

  • Talk to your dr. they have things to help you at night if you have sleep apneia(sp).
  • Never experienced it either but if it happened twice n one night and you couldn't breathe I would definitely call your doctor or go in to er to see what's wrong. That's scary and I hope all is well. How far along are you.
  • I started having acid reflux this pregnancy also. I have a hard time eating anything because soon after I start feeling the burning in my throat. I read somewhere they said try not to eat too close to bedtime or whn you are about to lay down. I went and bought some pepcid ac yesterday, since researching acid reflux, they said it was safe during pregnancy. This will hold me over until my next appointment when I can discuss these issues with my doctor. It worked almost immediately....I hope this helps :)
  • I had that happen once or twice. It is scary. I would ask your doc for heartburn medicine. There are several you can take while pregnant. My hubby would sleep through the whole thing too I'm sure. SMH. I hope the doc can help you ;)
  • Are you taking Tums at night? I have to take two almost every night. It might help. Or call doc and see if they have something else for heartburn/acid reflux. Also, use lots of pillows to elevate your head, and keep water at the bedside. It will help if it wakes you up at night. So sorry your having this, it is, in my opinion, the WORST part of pregnancy. I hate it! How far along are you?
  • OMG I know what ur talking about. Had it happen and I wasn't even pregnant. Sleep propped up and avoid eating spicy, greasy, or saucy foods after like 7 or 8. Have tums on hand and if you're worried talk to your Dr.
  • My husband has this problem, he gets extreme acid reflux while he's asleep. He hasn't died from it though, luckily. Last night I woke up with the worst heartburn of my life and was super desperate so I googled it. Most people said vinegar helps with acid. Some people suggested apple cider vinegar or even just pickles or mustard. I was desperate so I ate a spoonful or mustard. It worked! Maybe try eating something with vinegar before you go to bed?
  • Maybe you should try to sleep elevated.
  • @Jess510 , @cicelia i had sleep studies done before and i do have mild sleep apnea but my insurance doesn't cover the mask and i cant afford it out of pocket so i think i'm s.o.l
